Leaf Spring Bushings with Fitting Position Front and Rear, Front, Rear for 2002 GMC Sierra 1500 Base

Nolathane leaf spring bushings renew the pivot points that hold a leaf spring to the frame of your GMC Sierra 1500. Each leaf spring bushing sits in a spring eye or a shackle, where it locates the axle and lets the spring pivot as it flexes. Once the factory rubber splits or sags, the axle starts to shift under power, braking, and load.

Polyurethane replacements restore firm axle location at the front eye, rear eye, and shackle, and they suit work trucks, towing rigs, and off-road vehicles alike. Each listing shows which eye or shackle the bushing is for, its dimensions, and whether it matches your GMC Sierra 1500.

How GMC Sierra 1500 Leaf Spring Bushings Work

A leaf spring does two jobs at once. It carries the weight of your GMC Sierra 1500, and it locates the axle, so the bushings at each end decide how well the rear end stays in place.

The front eye bolts to a fixed hanger on the frame. Because it can?t move fore and aft, it sets the axle?s position along the vehicle and resists the pull of acceleration and braking.

The rear eye connects to a shackle, a short swinging link. As the spring compresses, its arc flattens and it gets longer, and the shackle swings to take up that extra length. Without it, the spring would bind and the ride would turn harsh.

Leaf spring bushings let both ends pivot without metal touching metal. Nolathane bushings run on a lubricated steel center sleeve, so the spring eye turns freely around it, while bonded rubber has to wind itself up and unwind on every bump.

GMC Sierra 1500 Spring Eye and Shackle Bushing Positions

Every leaf spring carries bushings at the front eye, the rear eye, and the shackle?s frame mount, and each one wears at its own rate.

Front Eye Bushings

The front eye takes the most force, because driveline torque and braking load push straight through it. A worn front bushing is usually the source of a clunk when pulling away or stopping.

Rear Eye Bushings

The rear eye pivots on one end of the shackle. It moves through a larger arc than the front eye, which is why it often wears oval first.

Shackle Bushings

A leaf spring shackle bushing sits where the shackle bolts to the frame. Since the shackle swings every time the suspension moves, these bushings are among the busiest on the truck, and they often fail alongside the rear eye bushings.

Spring Cushions

Some designs use a cushion or pad between the spring and the axle perch, held in place by the U-bolts. A cracked cushion can let the spring shift on the axle, so it?s worth renewing it while the U-bolts are off.

Signs of Worn Leaf Spring Bushings on Your GMC Sierra 1500

Rear leaf spring bushings wear gradually, and many owners put up with the symptoms for months before tracing them. The common signs include:

• Clunks from the rear on take-off and braking
• Squeaks or creaks over bumps and driveway entries
• Wheel hop or axle tramp under hard acceleration
• The rear end stepping sideways over rough pavement
• Uneven rear tire wear
• Cracked or extruded rubber, or a spring eye sitting off-center on its bolt

Any one of these is worth a closer look with the truck on the ground. Have someone rock your GMC Sierra 1500 while you watch each eye and shackle for movement.

Rubber, Polyurethane, and Greasable Leaf Spring Bushings for the GMC Sierra 1500

Leaf spring bushings come in a few designs, and each one involves a trade-off.

Most trucks leave the factory with rubber. It?s quiet and absorbs vibration well, but it tears as it twists, and it sags under constant load until the eye can move on the bolt.

Polyurethane keeps the axle planted and holds its shape for far longer. Its high load-bearing capability suits towing and heavy payloads, and because spring eyes sit low and take a constant spray of road grime, its resistance to oil, grease, ozone, and weathering earns its keep.

Greasable pin designs pair polyurethane bushings with a drilled pin and a zerk fitting. They let you push fresh grease into the bushing at every oil change, which keeps it quiet and helps prevent a pin from seizing in the sleeve.

Bronze bushings are another option on some heavy-duty and older springs. They?re very durable but need regular greasing and pass more noise into the frame.

GMC Sierra 1500 Benefits for Towing, Hauling, and Off-Road Use

A loaded spring works its bushings hardest, so firmer bushings pay off most on trucks that carry or pull weight.

Under acceleration, the axle tries to rotate and wind the spring into an S shape. This is known as axle wrap. Firm front eye bushings reduce the slack that lets it start, which means less wheel hop and less strain on the driveline.

When towing, a well-located axle keeps the rear end tracking straight behind the cab, so the truck feels steadier under braking and in crosswinds. Off-road, polyurethane tolerates the mud, water, and road salt that break rubber down early.

Measuring and Choosing GMC Sierra 1500 Leaf Spring Bushings

Direct-fit kits are matched to your GMC Sierra 1500, and universal kits are matched to measurements. Either way, each listing shows the dimensions and contents, so confirm the points below before ordering.

Spring Eye Inside Diameter

Measure the inside of the spring eye with the old bushing removed. Scrape out any scale and leftover rubber first, since both throw the reading off.

Spring Width

The bushing has to fill the eye from side to side. Measure the width of the spring leaf at the eye, not the width of the hanger.

Pin or Bolt Diameter

The inner sleeve must match the bolt or pin. Even a small gap lets the sleeve rattle on the bolt, and the noise you set out to fix comes back.

Vehicle-Specific and Universal Kits

A vehicle-specific leaf spring bushing kit takes the guesswork out, because the bushing hardness and dimensions are already selected for that position. Universal kits suit older, custom, or hard-to-match springs. Trailer owners can compare the listed dimensions against their own spring eyes.

Removing and Fitting GMC Sierra 1500 Leaf Spring Bushings

Leaf spring bushing removal is often the hardest part of the job, because old rubber and steel sleeves rust into the eye. Qualified installation is recommended, as the springs carry the full weight of the rear of your GMC Sierra 1500.

1. Put jack stands under the frame rails, then take the axle?s weight with a floor jack.
2. Unload the spring so the eye and shackle bolts can be removed without binding.
3. Remove the old bushings with a press or bushing tool. Where the rubber has to be cut or burned out, keep heat well away from fuel lines, brake lines, and wiring.
4. Wire-brush the eye until it?s clean, and check it hasn?t worn oval.
5. Press in the new bushing halves, coat the sleeve and outer faces with polyurethane-safe grease, then push the sleeve through.
6. Refit the bolts, lower the truck, and tighten the eye and shackle bolts to spec only once the truck is sitting at its normal ride height.

Replace any worn or corroded bolts, pins, or shackle plates while the spring is down. Check the bolt torque again after the first stretch of driving under load, because new bushings bed in slightly.

GMC Sierra 1500 Leaf Spring Bushing Limitations and Trade-Offs

Leaf spring bushings restore axle location, but they have clear limits:

• Polyurethane sends a little more road noise and vibration into the cab than fresh rubber
• It can squeak if the sleeves aren?t greased with the right grease
• Bushings can?t fix a sagging or cracked spring, a worn hanger, loose U-bolts, or a worn shackle
• Firmer bushings alone won?t stop axle wrap on a heavily modified truck with more power or bigger tires

A truck with tired springs and worn bushings rides best when both are replaced at the same time.

Compliance and Insurance

Inspection and towing rules are set by each state, including requirements for trailers where relevant. Follow the requirements of your GMC Sierra 1500?s home state, and notify your insurance company of any suspension modifications.

Warranty and Support

Nolathane leaf spring bushings and spring cushions have a lifetime warranty covering manufacturing defects in material and workmanship, and the cover stays with the original vehicle the bushings were first installed in. The warranty covers how the part was made, not normal wear, accident damage, or misuse. Any pins, bolts, washers, or nuts included in a kit are backed by Nolathane?s warranty.

If you?d like a hand measuring a spring eye, choosing between greasable and standard kits, or tracking down which position is making the noise, our local support team is ready to help.
