Greaseable shackle bolts are shackle pins with a grease fitting and internal passage that let you pump fresh grease into the bushing while it is installed. Greaseable shackles keep the pivot lubricated, push out water and grit, stop the pin seizing and keep polyurethane bushings quiet, which suits trucks that see mud, salt or heavy loads.
Every time your leaf springs move, each leaf spring shackle pin pivots inside its bushing. Over time water, mud and road grime work their way into each leaf spring bushing and shackle pivot, the lubrication washes out and the pivot starts to squeak, wear and eventually seize. Greasable shackle bolts solve that by letting you service the pivot without taking anything apart. Here is how they work, when they are worth fitting and how they pair with our polyurethane leaf spring shackle bushings.
How Greasable Shackle Bolts Work
A standard shackle bolt is a plain steel bolt that passes through the bushing sleeve. A greasable shackle bolt has a grease fitting on its head and a passage drilled along its center, with one or more cross holes that open out where the bolt sits inside the bushing. When you pump grease into the fitting, it travels through the bolt and out into the pivot.
As fresh grease goes in, it pushes old grease, water and grit out of the ends of the bushing. That keeps the bearing surfaces clean and lubricated, which is the key to smooth, quiet movement and long bushing life.
Benefits of Greaseable Shackles
|
Benefit |
Why it matters |
|
Prevents seized shackle pins |
A pin rusted into its sleeve is one of the hardest parts to remove |
|
Flushes out water and grit |
Fresh grease pushes contaminants out of the pivot |
|
Keeps polyurethane quiet |
Regular lubrication stops squeaks before they start |
|
Extends bushing life |
Clean, lubricated surfaces wear far more slowly |
|
Easy servicing |
A grease gun is all you need, with no disassembly |
These benefits matter most on 4x4s that cross water, trucks driven on salted winter roads and work trucks that carry heavy loads every day. For a light-duty street truck, standard shackle hardware with fresh polyurethane bushings and the correct installation grease is still a big improvement over worn rubber.
Our Greaseable Shackle Kits
We offer front and rear greaseable shackle bushing and hardware kits that convert the shackle to a maintainable design. Each kit pairs our polyurethane shackle bushings with greaseable hardware, so the pivot can be re-lubricated periodically to prevent seizing and extend the life of the bushings. We also offer greaseable main spring eye bushing kits for the other end of the spring, and shackle pin kits where only the pins need replacing.
Kits are matched to platform and position, so check fitment for your truck before ordering. Install times range from under an hour for simple shackle sets to around three hours for complete spring eye and shackle kits. Our guide to leaf spring shackle replacement walks through the installation.

Best Grease for Leaf Spring Bushings
Use the grease specified in our installation guide for both the initial installation and ongoing servicing. Polyurethane bushings rely on the right lubricant to pivot smoothly on their sleeves, and the wrong product can wash out quickly or fail to protect the surfaces. A quality, water-resistant grease that suits polyurethane is the type to look for.
Pump grease in slowly until you see fresh grease appear at the edges of the bushing, then wipe away the excess. Forcing in too much too quickly can push a bushing out of position, so take your time.
How Often Should You Grease Shackle Bolts?
A practical routine is to grease the shackles whenever you change the oil or rotate the tires. Add an extra service after deep water crossings, mud runs or a winter of driving on salted roads, since those conditions flush out lubrication fastest. If you hear a squeak return, it is usually a sign the pivot is due for grease.
If your current shackles already squeak, start with our guide to squeaky leaf springs to confirm the source.
