Nolathane leaf spring pads sit between a leaf spring and your Chevrolet Camaro's axle perch, cushioning the spring pack at the point where the U-bolts clamp it to the axle. Also sold as a leaf spring isolator or leaf spring insulator, the pad stops steel grinding on steel and keeps road shock from ringing straight through the axle into the frame.
A fresh pad brings back a quiet, solid rear end on work trucks, pickups, 4x4 and 4WD vehicles, and older leaf-sprung cars, and it?s usually renewed when the U-bolts or springs come off anyway. Each listing shows the spring pack type, pad style, and dimensions it suits.
Where Chevrolet Camaro Leaf Spring Pads Sit
A leaf spring is held to the axle at its midpoint. The spring pack rests on an axle perch, also called a spring saddle, that?s welded to the axle tube. A spring plate sits on the other side, and two U-bolts wrap over the assembly and pull it tight.
The center bolt runs through every leaf and holds the pack together. Its head protrudes from the bottom leaf and drops into a locating hole in the perch, which keeps the spring from sliding fore and aft.
The leaf spring pad goes between the bottom leaf and the perch, and on some designs a second pad sits between the top leaf and the spring plate. Once the U-bolts are torqued, the pad lives under full clamp load for the rest of its life. That?s a harder job than it looks, because the pad has to stay thick enough to keep the U-bolts tight while still damping vibration from the axle.
Chevrolet Camaro Pads, Isolators, and Saddle Insulators
Leaf spring isolator pads come in a few forms, each matched to how the spring and perch were built at the factory.
Mono Leaf Spring Pads
A mono leaf spring is a single tapered leaf, thickest at the center. Pads for mono leaf setups are usually shaped to its profile and width, and they often wrap around the edges of the leaf to stop it walking sideways on the perch.
Multi Leaf Spring Pads
A multi leaf spring stacks several leaves of decreasing length. The pad here is commonly a flat or lightly contoured insulator with a hole for the center bolt head, and on heavier packs it may be thicker to spread the clamp load evenly across the bottom leaf.
Spring-to-Saddle Insulator Bushings
Some vehicles use a molded saddle insulator, a bushing-style piece that cups the spring and isolates it from both the perch and the spring plate. These leaf spring insulator pads do more isolating than a flat pad and are common on older passenger cars and light-duty trucks built for a softer ride.
Tracing Chevrolet Camaro Leaf Spring Noise
Rear-end noise on a leaf-sprung vehicle usually comes from one of three places, and pinning down the source first saves money.
Perch pad noise tends to be a dull clunk or pop when your Chevrolet Camaro moves off, brakes hard, or crosses a dip, because a thin or missing pad lets the spring shift on the perch. A pad that has worn through can also cause a groan under heavy load or while towing, as bare steel rubs on steel.
Eye and shackle bushing noise shows up as a squeak or creak at the ends of the spring, usually louder over speed bumps and with the vehicle unloaded. Bounce the rear and listen at each spring eye to separate it from the center of the spring.
Leaf-to-leaf friction is a dry, rhythmic squeak from the spring pack itself as the leaves slide against each other. It follows suspension movement closely and often gets worse in dust or after rain.
Signs of Worn Leaf Spring Pads on Your Chevrolet Camaro
Leaf spring pads wear slowly, and the signs often turn up during other work:
- Pads that are thin, cracked, split, hardened, or missing
- Rust stains or polished wear marks on the axle perch
- A spring that has shifted on the perch, or a center bolt head not sitting squarely in its hole
- U-bolts that keep losing torque after being tightened
- More harshness and vibration coming through the frame than before
Loose U-bolts are the warning to take seriously. As a pad compresses, clamp load drops, the spring can shift, and in the worst case the center bolt shears.
Rubber, Fiber, and Polyurethane Leaf Spring Pads for the Chevrolet Camaro
The leaf spring rubber pad is the factory standard on many trucks. Rubber is soft and quiet when new, but under constant clamp load it slowly flattens, and once oil, heat, and winter salt attack it, it cracks and splits. A flattened rubber pad is one of the main reasons U-bolts lose torque over the years.
Fiber and composite pads are thinner and harder. They resist compression well, but they do little to isolate vibration and can break up once they absorb water.
A polyurethane leaf spring pad sits between the two. It holds its thickness under clamp load far better than rubber, so U-bolt tension stays where it was set, and oil, grease, ozone, and weathering barely affect it. Keeping the clamp tight also helps the spring stay put when engine torque twists the axle, known as axle wrap, during hard launches or heavy towing. The trade-off is a slightly firmer feel than fresh rubber.
Nolathane matches each pad?s durometer (its hardness grade) to the clamp load and isolation its position needs. For a truck that tows or carries payload, that high load-bearing capability, combined with strong abrasion resistance in a spot that collects grit and water, is the main reason to choose polyurethane.
Choosing Leaf Spring Pads for Your Chevrolet Camaro
Each listing shows the pad style, spring width, and center bolt arrangement it suits. Replace pads on both sides of the axle together, whether they come singly or as a leaf spring pad kit, and check three details before ordering.
Mono or Multi Leaf Spring Pack
Confirm whether your spring is a single tapered leaf or a stacked pack. Mono leaf pads are shaped for a specific leaf profile and won?t seat properly on a multi leaf pack.
Spring Width and Center Bolt Hole
Measure the width of the bottom leaf and check the size and position of the center bolt head. The pad?s center hole has to clear the bolt head so it can still locate in the perch.
Pad or Saddle Insulator Type
Look at what came off your Chevrolet Camaro. A flat pad, a wraparound pad, and a molded saddle insulator aren?t interchangeable, because the perch and spring plate are shaped around the original design.
Fitting Leaf Spring Pads on Your Chevrolet Camaro
The ideal time to install leaf spring pads is during U-bolt replacement, spring replacement, or axle work, when the spring is already unclamped. The general sequence is:
- Raise the truck safely, support the frame on stands, and carry the axle on a jack so neither spring is loaded.
- Remove the U-bolts and spring plate, then lower the axle just enough to slide out the old pad.
- Clean the perch and spring plate and check them for cracks or heavy corrosion.
- Place the new pad and lower the spring so the center bolt head drops squarely into the perch hole.
- Install new U-bolts and nuts, since used U-bolts stretch and shouldn?t be reused.
- Tighten the nuts evenly in a cross pattern, in stages, to the manufacturer?s specification.
- Go back over the U-bolt nuts once the truck has covered a short break-in distance, because new pads settle slightly as they bed in.
Running one U-bolt fully tight before the other tilts the spring plate and crushes the pad unevenly, so take each nut up a little at a time. U-bolts and axle hardware are safety-critical, and if you aren?t confident with the job, have it done by a qualified installer.
Chevrolet Camaro Leaf Spring Pad Limitations and Trade-Offs
Leaf spring pads fix problems at the spring-to-axle interface and nowhere else:
- They don?t stop leaf-to-leaf squeak, which needs interleaf anti-friction pads, a different part that sits between the leaves
- They can?t repair a sagging, cracked, or broken spring, or worn eye and shackle bushings
- Some fitments may need the spring plate?s center hole adjusted, and each listing notes this
- On a lightly loaded truck, a polyurethane pad lets a little more axle vibration reach the frame than new rubber would
Compliance and Insurance
Towing equipment, suspension condition, and safety inspections are each regulated by the state where a vehicle is registered, and the rules aren?t uniform. Check that your setup complies with those rules, especially if it tows a trailer or carries heavy payload, and notify your insurer of any changes to the suspension.
