Nolathane alignment bushes correct V20 ES wheel alignment at the source: the suspension pivot. By replacing a standard bush with one that moves the pivot point, an alignment bush shifts caster, camber or toe in a measured direction without modifying the arm or the chassis. They?re the go-to fix for caster correction on lifted 4WDs, steering pull that a normal alignment can?t remove, and geometry limits on lowered or performance vehicles.
Whether the problem is a lifted 4x4 that wanders at highway speed, a passenger car that drifts to one side, or a performance build that needs more camber than the factory adjusters allow, caster correction bushes and other alignment bushes provide a cost-effective, non-destructive solution.
How Alignment Bushes Work on the V20 ES
A standard suspension bush holds its arm centred in the mount. An alignment bush, also called an offset bush or eccentric bush, positions the inner sleeve off-centre within the bush body. When it?s fitted, the arm?s pivot point moves forwards, backwards, inwards or outwards by a small, fixed amount.
That small movement at the pivot is multiplied at the wheel. Moving a lower control arm pivot rearward moves the lower ball joint and changes caster. Moving an upper arm pivot inward or outward changes camber. On a solid axle 4WD, offsetting the radius arm or leading arm bushes rotates the whole axle housing, which changes caster at both front wheels.
Some alignment bushes provide a single fixed offset, some combine two offsets for greater correction, and some are adjustable so the setting can be fine-tuned during the wheel alignment.
Understanding Caster and Why It Matters
Caster is the backward or forward tilt of the steering axis when viewed from the side of the vehicle. Positive caster, where the top of the steering axis tilts rearward, gives straight-line stability and makes the steering wheel return to centre after a turn. Too little caster makes the steering feel light, nervous and prone to wandering, especially at highway speed or when towing.
Caster also affects steering pull. If one side has noticeably less caster than the other, the vehicle drifts towards the side with less. Road crown, the slight slope built into most roads for drainage, can make a vehicle drift even when its caster is equal. A small, deliberate caster difference between sides is a common way to counter it.
Caster Correction for a Lifted V20 ES
On a solid front axle 4WD, the axle is located by radius arms or leading arms that run from the axle to the chassis. When the vehicle is lifted, those arms tilt downward and rotate the axle, reducing caster. Even a modest lift can noticeably lighten the steering, cause wandering and contribute to speed wobble.
Caster correction bushes, often called castor correction bushes, fit at the radius arm or leading arm mounts and rotate the axle back towards its correct caster. They?re one of the simplest ways to restore stable steering after a lift. Larger lifts may need more correction than bushes alone can provide, and in those cases bushes are often combined with other components. Each listing shows the correction a kit provides and the lift range it suits.
Common Alignment Bush Positions
Alignment bushes are used at several pivot positions, depending on the vehicle and the correction needed:
- Front lower control arm inner pivots, for caster correction and steering pull
- Front upper control arm pivots, for camber and caster on double wishbone suspensions
- Strut rods and radius rods on passenger cars, for front caster
- Radius arm and leading arm mounts on solid axle 4WDs, for caster after a lift
- Rear control arm pivots, for rear camber and toe correction
Each listing shows the position, the vehicle and the type of correction for that kit.
Signs Your V20 ES Needs Alignment Bushes
- The wheel alignment report shows caster, camber or toe outside specification with the factory adjusters at their limit
- The vehicle pulls or drifts to one side on a straight, flat road
- Light, wandering or nervous steering after a lift
- The steering wheel is slow to return to centre after a turn
- Tyres wear on the inner or outer edge despite regular alignments
- Speed wobble or shimmy on a lifted solid axle 4WD
Polyurethane vs Rubber Offset Bushes
Offset bushes are available in both rubber and polyurethane. Rubber offset bushes are soft and quiet but deflect under load, so some of the correction can be lost under braking and cornering, and the rubber eventually perishes.
Polyurethane holds its shape under load, so the geometry correction stays where it was set. Nolathane has been making polyurethane suspension bushings since 1974, originally developed to replace brass bushes in hillclimb competition. The signature red bushings are made in a range of durometers (hardness grades) for each position and offer outstanding abrasion resistance, high load-bearing capability and resistance to oil, grease, ozone and weathering.
The honest trade-off is that polyurethane transmits slightly more road feel than soft rubber, which most drivers describe as firmer, more connected steering.
When to Fit Alignment Bushes
The best time to fit alignment bushes is when the suspension is already being worked on:
- During a suspension lift or lowering, so caster or camber is corrected as part of the job
- When replacing worn factory bushes, so the new bushes also correct the geometry
- After an alignment shows a setting can?t be reached with the factory adjusters
- When chasing a persistent pull that tyre rotation and standard alignment haven?t fixed
Fitting during other suspension work keeps labour to a minimum, and the job finishes with a single wheel alignment.
Choosing and Fitting Alignment Bushes on Your V20 ES
Start with a wheel alignment report, which shows which angle is out and by how much. Then choose the kit for the correct position, side and vehicle. Our fitment guarantee means the kit you order for your V20 ES is confirmed to suit it.
Fitting suits professional workshops and experienced home mechanics, and many positions require a press to remove the factory bushes. Note the orientation of each offset bush carefully, as fitting one the wrong way round can double the error instead of correcting it. Tighten pivot bolts with the vehicle at ride height, then have a wheel alignment (tracking) carried out to confirm and set the final geometry.
Limitations and Compliance
Alignment bushes provide a limited amount of correction at each pivot. They can?t fix a bent arm, a damaged chassis mount or worn ball joints, and very large lifts may need other components as well. Any suspension modification should meet the vehicle standards where the vehicle is registered, as rules vary between Australian states and in the UK and Europe, including MOT or periodic inspections. Tell your insurer about any changes to suspension or ride height.
