A suspension bush is the flexible sleeve sitting between two metal suspension components. It lets the joint pivot, keeps metal off metal, and controls how far the component is allowed to move under load.
Nearly every pivot point on your V20, V21, V22 CAMRY has one, which is why it carries dozens of suspension bushings, and why worn suspension bushes change how a vehicle drives more than almost any other part.
What a Bush Does and Why Worn Ones Change How Your V20, V21, V22 CAMRY Drives
Springs carry the weight and dampers control the movement. The bushes decide where everything is pointed while that happens.
Take a control arm as the clearest example, because it pivots on bushes at the chassis end and carries the wheel at the other, so under braking the wheel is being pushed backward and through a corner it is being loaded sideways. The only thing resisting either is the bush at each pivot, and whatever deflection it allows becomes a change in camber, caster or toe at the tyre.
Because the arm is a lever, that deflection is multiplied by the time it reaches the road. A millimetre of give at the pivot becomes considerably more than a millimetre of unwanted movement at the contact patch, and with two bushes on most arms giving at once, the effect compounds.
This is why a vehicle can measure perfectly on a wheel alignment rack and still wander, follow ruts and chew the inside edge of a tyre. The workshop measured it standing still, and standing still there is nothing wrong with it.
Where Bushes Sit on Your V20, V21, V22 CAMRY
Almost every pivot and mounting point has one, and each does a different job.
Control arm bushes stabilise the arms so the geometry holds under load, and front lower control arm bushes take the heaviest of it since that arm does the most work. Upper control arm bushes do the same at the top of the hub where a vehicle uses one, and rear control arm bushes handle camber and location at the back.
Sway bar bushes locate the bar to the chassis so it can twist rather than move, while sway bar link bushes hold the ends tight so the load actually reaches the bar. Together they control how much vehicle sway you get through a corner.
Leaf spring bushes and shackle bushes stabilise the movement of a solid rear axle, and worn ones let the axle shift enough to steer the back of the vehicle on its own. Radius arm bushes and caster bushes control axle rotation and therefore caster on a solid front axle. Trailing arm bushes handle acceleration and braking load at the rear, and panhard rod bushes are the only thing stopping a live axle moving sideways.
Beyond those there are shock absorber bushes at both mounts, differential and subframe mounts, steering rack bushings, gear selector and engine mount positions, and the smaller locations nobody thinks about until something starts to rattle.
Polyurethane V20, V21, V22 CAMRY Bushes Against Factory Rubber
Factory bushes are rubber because rubber is quiet and cheap to produce at volume, and it absorbs small road inputs before they reach the cabin. That is genuinely useful on a standard vehicle.
What you pay for it is deflection and lifespan. Rubber compresses under load and never fully returns, it dries out and cracks through heat cycling and UV exposure, and oil contamination finishes off whatever is left. It is also specified for a standard vehicle on standard tyres carrying standard loads, so the moment you add weight, tow with it, lift it or fit larger tyres, the rubber suspension bush is working outside anything it was designed for.
Polyurethane bushes hold their shape where rubber gives up, and the difference shows up in ways you can measure rather than just feel.
- Less deflection, so the alignment stays where the workshop set it under load instead of drifting
- Far longer service life, since polyurethane does not perish, crack or dry rot the way rubber does
- Resistance to the oil, grease, ozone and weathering that live under every vehicle
- More consistent steering response, because the amount of movement does not change with load
- Cornering traction and braking stability that hold up when the vehicle is loaded rather than empty
The objection people raise about polyurethane bushings is harshness, and it deserves a straight answer. Bush design and hardness decide ride quality far more than the material itself, and where a kit is firm enough to add noticeable noise or vibration, the listing says so.
What Grease to Use on Polyurethane Bushes
This matters more than most people realise, and it is the most common cause of a complaint after fitting.
Polyurethane bushes work by sliding on the crush tube rather than twisting the way a bonded rubber bush does, so they rely on a film of grease between the bush and the tube. Without it the bush wears its way to a fit and starts squeaking, which is almost always an assembly problem rather than a fault with the part.
Use a grease formulated for polyurethane, because silicone based and PTFE greases are the right choice, since they stay in place and will not attack the material. Ordinary lithium and petroleum based greases are what to avoid, because over time they can degrade polyurethane rather than protect it.
Grease the bore and the crush tube on assembly rather than just one of them, and where a bush is designed to be serviced through a grease nipple, top it up at each service.
Signs Your V20, V21, V22 CAMRY Suspension Bushes Are Worn
- Clunking, knocking or squeaking from the suspension over bumps and driveways
- Steering that feels vague and wanders, needing constant correction
- More vehicle sway through corners, with the body slower to settle afterward
- Uneven tyre wear, usually concentrated on one edge
- An alignment that will not hold specification between services
- The vehicle pulling to one side under braking
- Visible cracking, splitting, perishing or material squeezed out of a bush
- Everything getting noticeably worse under load, while towing, or off road
- A roadworthy or inspection report listing play at a suspension joint
If you are chasing a noise nobody can find, worn suspension bushes are worth checking before anything else. They fail quietly and gradually, which is exactly why they get overlooked for years.
Single Kits, Grouped Kits and Complete Vehicle Kits for the V20, V21, V22 CAMRY
Kits are offered at several depths and the right one depends on what you are dealing with.
Single position kits target one joint, which suits a diagnosed fault where the rest of the suspension is genuinely sound.
Front suspension bushes and rear suspension bushes are also grouped as kits covering the positions that matter most for how the vehicle drives, covering an end of the car without dismantling every mounting point on it. For most repairs this is the practical choice.
Complete vehicle kits cover every position, which suits an older vehicle still on original rubber, a restoration, or a 4WD you would rather sort out properly and then forget about.
Check each listing for exactly which positions it includes, since layouts differ enormously between vehicles.
Ordering by Size When the Vehicle Lookup Comes Up Short
Bushes are matched to the housing they sit in rather than to the vehicle alone, which is useful when you are working on something modified, imported or unusual.
Searching Nolathane bushes by size will find a part when a vehicle lookup will not. Measure the housing bore, the inner diameter that takes the bolt or crush tube, and the overall width, then match those figures rather than hunting for a part number.
Measure the housing rather than the old bush, since one that has been in service for years has spread at the ends and compressed through the middle, and it will give you a figure that was never correct to begin with.
What the V20, V21, V22 CAMRY Bush Job Costs and Where the Money Goes
The bushes themselves are inexpensive, and getting to them is where the money actually goes.
Almost every position needs the arm or component off the vehicle and the old bush pressed out, and that work takes the same time whether you replace one bush or every bush on that corner. Pay for the teardown, the press work and an alignment today for a single position, then pay for all three again next year, and the labour has cost far more than the parts ever did.
That is the argument for doing a whole corner, or a whole end of your V20, V21, V22 CAMRY, in one go. It is also why fitting bushes during any other suspension work costs almost nothing extra in labour, since the teardown has already been paid for.
When comparing quotes, the variables that move the number are how many positions are being done, whether components have to come off the vehicle, and whether an alignment is included.
Pressing, Crush Tubes and Torque at Ride Height on Your V20, V21, V22 CAMRY
Most positions need a press, and a correct diameter press tool is what keeps the mounting eye intact. A damaged eye cannot be repaired and costs far more than the tool, so improvising with sockets or old bearing shells is a false economy.
Check the eye while the old bush is out. A bore worn oval will not hold a new bush and means that component needs replacing rather than rebushing.
Fit the crush tubes and sleeves supplied, because the tube carries clamping load from the bolt and a bush fitted without one gets crushed the moment the fastener is torqued.
Torque with the vehicle on its wheels at ride height rather than hanging at full droop. Whatever position a bush is clamped in becomes its neutral position, so one tightened at droop spends its life twisted and binds from the first kilometre. More new bushes are ruined by this than by anything else, and it costs nothing at all to get right.
Finish with a wheel alignment on anything affecting wheel position, since fresh bushes change where everything sits and the old settings no longer apply.
