Nolathane Watts link bushes replace the worn bushes in the DF LTD Watts linkage, the suspension system that keeps the rear axle centred under the body. A Watts link uses several pivots, and every one of them relies on its bush to stay tight. When those bushes wear, the axle starts to shift sideways in corners, and the rear of the vehicle feels loose and unsettled.
Polyurethane Watts link bushes restore firm, accurate lateral axle location, sharpening the rear end?s response on passenger, performance and classic vehicles fitted with Watts link suspension.
What a Watts Link Is on the DF LTD
A Watts linkage, often called a Watts link, is a mechanism originally devised by engineer James Watt to make a point move in a near-perfect straight line. In vehicle suspension, it?s used to locate a rear axle sideways while allowing it to move freely up and down.
A typical Watts link has three parts:
- A short central link, sometimes called a propeller or bell crank, mounted to the axle or differential housing and free to rotate
- Two horizontal links, one running from each end of the central link to the body or chassis on opposite sides of the vehicle
As the suspension compresses and extends, the central link rotates, and the two side links pull in opposite directions. The result is that the axle?s centre moves straight up and down, with almost no sideways movement.
Watts Link vs Panhard Rod
Both a Watts link and a panhard rod (also called a panhard bar or track bar) stop a solid axle moving sideways, but they work differently.
A panhard rod is a single bar from one side of the chassis to the other side of the axle. It?s simple and strong, but because it swings through an arc, the axle shifts slightly sideways as the suspension moves, and the rear can behave differently turning left and right.
A Watts link uses two opposing links and a central pivot, so the axle stays centred through its travel and the rear end behaves the same in both directions. The trade-off is more pivot points, and more bushes, that need to stay in good condition. That?s why worn Watts link bushes have such a noticeable effect on handling.
Why Watts Link Bushes Matter
Every sideways force on the rear axle passes through the Watts link bushes, from cornering and lane changes to crosswinds and road camber. With several pivots in the linkage, a small amount of wear at each bush adds up to a noticeable amount of axle movement. Keeping the bushes firm keeps the linkage doing its job of holding the axle precisely centred.
Why Watts Link Bushes Wear
- Constant sideways loads in corners and on uneven roads
- Heat from the exhaust and differential
- Oil and fluid leaks softening rubber
- Road grit and water around the pivots
- Age and ozone hardening and cracking rubber
- Performance driving with higher cornering forces and stickier tyres
Signs of Worn DF LTD Watts Link Bushes
- The rear of the vehicle shifting or stepping sideways in corners
- A vague or delayed response when turning into a corner
- Rear-end wander or a floating feeling at highway speed
- Clunking or knocking from the rear over bumps or during direction changes
- Different handling when turning left compared with right
- Uneven rear tyre wear
- Cracked, split or perished rubber at the central link or side link pivots
These symptoms can be mistaken for worn trailing arm bushes or tired shock absorbers, so inspect the whole rear suspension when diagnosing.
Polyurethane vs Rubber Watts Link Bushes
Factory Watts link bushes are typically rubber, chosen for quietness. They deflect under sideways load, and that deflection increases as the rubber ages.
Polyurethane Watts link bushes hold each pivot firmly, so the linkage keeps the axle precisely centred. Nolathane has been making polyurethane suspension bushings since 1974, originally developed to replace brass bushes in hillclimb competition. The signature red bushings are made in a range of durometers (hardness grades) for each position, and offer outstanding abrasion resistance, high load-bearing capability, increased tensile strength and resistance to oil, grease, ozone and weathering.
The honest trade-off is that firmer bushes transmit slightly more road feel into the cabin than soft rubber. Most drivers notice a tighter, more connected rear end rather than harshness.
Choosing Watts Link Bushes for Your DF LTD
Watts link designs vary between vehicles, with different bushes at the central link and the side links. Before ordering, confirm the exact vehicle variant and the pivot positions you need. Replacing all the bushes in the linkage at the same time gives the most consistent result, because new bushes at some pivots and worn bushes at others leave the linkage uneven. Our fitment guarantee means the kit you order for your DF LTD is confirmed to suit it, and each listing shows the positions it covers.
Replacing Watts Link Bushes on Your DF LTD
Fitting suits professional workshops and experienced home mechanics. As a general guide:
- Support the vehicle securely on stands, keeping the rear axle supported at or near ride height.
- Remove the side links and, where required, the central link from the axle.
- Remove the old bushes, which may need a press, and clean the housings.
- Inspect the links and central pivot for bends, cracks or wear.
- Fit the new bushes with a grease suitable for polyurethane, such as a silicone or PTFE-based grease.
- Refit the linkage and tighten all fasteners to the manufacturer?s specification with the vehicle at ride height.
- Road test, then have a wheel alignment (tracking) checked if the rear suspension geometry was disturbed.
Tightening pivots with the axle hanging pre-loads the bushes and shortens their life, so always do the final tightening at ride height.
Lifetime Warranty
Nolathane Watts link bushes are backed by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects in material and workmanship, for the original vehicle they?re fitted to.
