Nolathane universal bump stops give workshops, restorers and 4WD owners a durable polyurethane replacement for worn or missing bump stops where a vehicle-specific part is unavailable or unsuitable. Selected by size and mounting style rather than make and model, they can be fitted wherever the dimensions suit the mounting point and the clearance at full compression.
Each listing shows the dimensions, mounting style and kit contents, so you can compare them directly with the original part or with measurements taken from the vehicle.
The Job a Bump Stop Does on the Ute and Panel Van WB
A bump stop is the last line of defence at the end of suspension compression. When a wheel hits a pothole, a washout or a sharp crest with enough force to use all of the spring?s travel, the bump stop makes contact before metal meets metal. It absorbs the final part of the impact, slows the axle or control arm progressively and stops the suspension from bottoming out.
Without an effective bump stop, that energy travels straight into the chassis, the shock absorber and the axle or arm mounts. The result can be a bent spring perch, a damaged shock absorber, cracked mounts or a tyre striking the wheel arch. Bump stops also prevent coil springs from reaching coil bind, where the coils stack solid and the spring can be permanently damaged.
Signs of Worn Ute and Panel Van WB Bump Stops
Bump stops are often forgotten because they only work at the extremes of travel. Typical signs of wear include:
- A harsh crash or metallic bang when the suspension bottoms out over bumps, dips or rough tracks.
- Cracked, crumbling, flattened or missing bump stops visible in the wheel arch or above the axle.
- Polished or dented contact pads on the chassis, axle or lower control arm.
- Tyre rub marks inside the guard (fender) after hard off-road driving or heavy loading.
- Shock absorbers failing early, especially on vehicles that carry heavy loads or tow.
Inspect the bump stops whenever springs or shock absorbers are replaced, and after any hard impact on or off road.
How Universal Bump Stops Are Selected
Bump stops are not all interchangeable. The shape, height and mounting method all affect how and when the stop engages. A universal bump stop is chosen by matching these points to the vehicle.
Height and Engagement Point
The height of the bump stop determines how much travel remains before it makes contact. Too tall, and it engages early, reducing usable travel and making the ride harsh. Too short, and the suspension may hit the chassis or bind before the stop takes effect.
Mounting Style
Bump stops may be pressed into a cup, bolted through a stud, or fitted over a spigot or shock absorber shaft. The mounting bore or stud must suit the vehicle?s bracket, and the base must sit flat so the load is spread evenly.
Profile and Diameter
The shape of the bump stop affects how progressively it resists compression. A tapered or cone-shaped stop builds resistance gradually, while a flat or cylindrical stop firms up more quickly. The diameter also needs to clear surrounding springs, brackets and brake lines.
Polyurethane Versus Rubber Bump Stops
Factory bump stops are usually rubber. A rubber bump stop works well when new, but it hardens, cracks and crumbles with age, heat and exposure to oil and road grime. Once it degrades, it can no longer absorb impact properly, and pieces may break away entirely.
Polyurethane bump stops resist oil, grease, ozone and weathering, and they offer outstanding abrasion resistance and tensile strength. They hold their shape over repeated heavy impacts and keep their elasticity and memory for longer than rubber. This makes them well suited to lifted or heavily loaded 4WDs, utes (pick-ups) used for towing, and vehicles that regularly see corrugations and rough tracks.
Bump Stops and Suspension Changes
Changing the suspension often changes what the bump stop needs to do. Lifting a 4WD increases ride height, but the axle or control arm can still travel up to the original contact point. On a solid axle, that extra travel can allow the tyre to strike the guard or the tailshaft (driveshaft or propshaft) to contact the floor. On independent front suspension, extra upward travel can over-angle CV joints or allow the control arm to strike the chassis.
Longer shock absorbers fitted with a lift can also reach full compression internally before the bump stop engages, damaging the shock. Matching the bump stop height to the new suspension setup protects the shocks, springs and driveline.
Lowered vehicles face the opposite challenge. With less available travel, a trimmed or shorter bump stop may be needed to avoid constant contact, but the suspension must still be prevented from bottoming out.
Fitting Universal Bump Stops on Your Ute and Panel Van WB
Most bump stops can be replaced without major dismantling. Clean the mounting cup, stud or contact pad, check it for cracks or corrosion, and fit the new stop so it sits squarely in place.
The most reliable way to confirm the engagement point is to check suspension travel with the spring removed or the vehicle supported and the wheel cycled to full compression. Measure the clearance between the tyre and guard, the shock absorber at full compression, and any driveline or steering components. The bump stop should make contact before any of these reach their limits.
Where a bump stop sits inside a shock absorber dust boot or over a shock shaft, make sure the inner diameter suits the shaft and that the stop moves freely without binding.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
Polyurethane is firmer than many soft rubber bump stops, so contact at full compression can feel more noticeable, especially over sharp, repeated bumps. A progressive profile reduces this, but drivers should expect a firmer final stage of travel.
Using a bump stop that is taller than needed reduces usable suspension travel and articulation, which can affect off-road traction and ride comfort. Using one that is too short can leave components exposed to damage. Bump stops also do not replace correct spring rates; a vehicle that bottoms out regularly in normal use is usually overloaded or needs stiffer springs, not just stronger stops.
Compliance
Bump stops are part of the suspension system, so any change must keep the vehicle safe and within the standards that apply where it is registered. In Australia, requirements vary between states and territories, particularly for lifted or lowered vehicles. In the UK and Europe, suspension condition is checked at the MOT or periodic roadworthiness inspection. Tell your insurer about any suspension modification.
Nolathane Polyurethane Expertise
Nolathane has been making polyurethane suspension bushings since 1974, originally developed to replace brass bushes in hillclimb competition. Today, Nolathane polyurethane is produced in a range of durometers (hardness grades), each selected for its application, so a bump stop can be firm enough to protect the suspension while still cushioning the final impact. The signature red components are built for mechanics and DIY owners who want to repair, restore or upgrade their suspension with parts designed to last.
Lifetime Warranty
Nolathane universal bump stops are covered by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects in material and workmanship, for the original vehicle they are fitted to. Our fitment guarantee means the part matches the dimensions shown in the listing, and a 60-day returns window gives you time to confirm the fit.
