Nolathane threaded rod sway bar links are complete link kits for the HT, HG H SERIES where it uses the traditional bolt-through link design. Each sway bar link kit renews the full assembly with a threaded rod, polyurethane bushes, spacer tubes, cupped washers and nuts, so every part of the link is replaced together and the sway bar regains a firm, quiet connection to the suspension.
Each listing shows the rod length, rod style and kit contents, along with the vehicle application where relevant, so you can match the kit to your existing links.
How Threaded Rod Sway Bar Links Work on the HT, HG H SERIES
A sway bar, also called an anti-roll bar or stabiliser bar, links the left and right sides of the suspension to resist body roll. On many classic passenger cars, 4WDs and utes (pick-ups), each end of the bar is connected to the control arm (wishbone) or axle by a threaded rod link rather than a ball-joint link.
The rod passes through a hole in the end of the sway bar and through a bracket on the suspension. Polyurethane bushes sit above and below the bar and above and below the bracket, each held by a cupped washer. A spacer tube between the bar and the bracket sets the distance between them and takes the clamping load. Nuts at each end squeeze the bush stacks against the tube, locating the link while allowing a small amount of angular movement as the suspension travels.
The design is simple and robust, with no ball joints to wear out, and every part can be inspected and renewed.
Straight and S-Shaped Rods
Most threaded rod links use a straight rod, with the bar and the lower mount directly in line. Some vehicles use an S-shaped or offset rod, where the mounting points are not aligned and the rod steps sideways between them. Heavy duty S-shaped rods are made to the correct profile for the applications that use them, so the bushes sit square against the bar and bracket.
Complete Kits and Hardware-Only Kits
Threaded rod sway bar links are available in two main forms:
- Complete link kits: Rods, polyurethane bushes, tubes, washers and nuts for both sides of the vehicle. This is the simplest way to renew worn links in a single job.
- Hardware kits without bushes: Rods, washers and nuts in a range of lengths, for custom builds or for workshops that prefer to specify bushes separately.
Replacing the whole assembly at once avoids pairing new parts with worn ones. A new bush will not last if it is clamped by a distorted washer, and a new rod will not run true if the old tube has corroded or shortened.
Signs Your HT, HG H SERIES Links Need Servicing
Threaded rod links wear gradually, so the warning signs often build over time:
- A knocking or rattling noise from the front or rear over speed bumps, potholes and corrugations.
- Increased body roll, or a vague, delayed response when turning in.
- Bushes that are cracked, flattened, split or extruded past the washers.
- Washers that are dished, rusted or pulling through the bushes.
- A rod that is bent, rusted or has damaged threads.
- A spacer tube that is corroded, cracked or missing.
Check the links whenever the suspension is serviced. With the vehicle supported, try to move each link by hand and look for free play between the rod, the bushes and the bar or bracket.
Handling and Suspension Performance
The sway bar only works as well as its links allow. Worn bushes let the rod move before the bar starts to twist, which delays the bar?s response and allows more body roll. Fresh polyurethane bushes, correctly clamped against a new tube, remove that delay.
After renewing threaded rod links, drivers commonly notice:
- Sharper, more immediate turn-in.
- Less body lean in corners and roundabouts.
- More stable behaviour during lane changes and in crosswinds.
- A quieter suspension over bumps.
Polyurethane bushes resist the compression and wear that cause rubber to lose its shape, so the improvement lasts. Nolathane polyurethane offers outstanding abrasion resistance, increased tensile strength and resistance to oil, grease, ozone and weathering.
Lifted and Off-Road Vehicles
Threaded rod links are common on older 4WDs and work utes, where their simple design suits rough conditions. When a vehicle is lifted, the distance between the sway bar and its lower mount increases. A longer rod and tube may be needed so the bar sits at a suitable angle and the bushes are not pulled out of alignment at full suspension extension.
Off-road articulation also places more angular movement on the bushes. Check that the rod, washers and bushes clear the springs, shock absorbers and brake lines through full travel, and inspect the links more often on vehicles that see corrugations, water crossings or heavy loads.
Measuring for the Right Fit
For vehicle-specific kits, select your HT, HG H SERIES and check the fitting position. For universal hardware kits, measure:
- Rod length: the overall length of the original rod.
- Rod diameter and thread: to ensure the nuts, washers and bushes suit.
- Tube length: the distance between the bar and the bracket that the spacer tube sets.
- Rod profile: straight or S-shaped.
Compare these with the details shown in each listing.
Fitting Threaded Rod Sway Bar Links on Your HT, HG H SERIES
Support the vehicle securely. Fitting is easiest with the suspension at normal ride height, such as on a drive-on hoist or ramps, so the sway bar is not twisted as the links are tightened.
Remove the old nuts, washers, bushes, rod and tube, noting the order of each part. Clean the sway bar eye and lower bracket, and check them for cracks or elongated holes. Lightly grease the bush faces with a polyurethane-compatible bushing grease, then assemble the new link in the correct order, with the cupped side of each washer facing its bush.
Tighten the nuts until the tube is firmly clamped and the bushes are evenly compressed, without crushing them. Use locknuts or double nuts where specified, and re-check the links after the first few hundred kilometres.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
Threaded rod links with polyurethane bushes are firmer than worn rubber links, so a little more road feel can reach the cabin. Over-tightening increases this and shortens bush life.
The link length is fixed by the rod and tube, so these links cannot be fine-tuned to remove sway bar preload in the way an adjustable ball-joint link can. Polyurethane bushes should be lubricated on assembly to prevent squeaks. New links will not correct a bent sway bar, worn sway bar mount bushes or damaged brackets, so inspect the whole system.
Compliance
Sway bars and their links affect vehicle stability, so any repair or modification must keep the vehicle safe and within the standards that apply where it is registered. In Australia, requirements vary between states and territories, particularly for lifted vehicles. In the UK and Europe, suspension components are checked at the MOT or periodic roadworthiness inspection. Tell your insurer about any suspension modification.
Nolathane Suspension Experience
With more than 50 years of experience in replacement and upgrade suspension components, Nolathane develops parts for mechanics and DIY owners across Australia and beyond. Threaded rod link kits combine that experience with signature red polyurethane bushes, made in durometers selected for each application, to give older and hard-working vehicles a durable, serviceable link.
Warranty and Support
Complete Nolathane threaded rod sway bar links are covered by a warranty of 3 years or 60,000 km (36,000 miles), whichever comes first, against manufacturing defects in material and workmanship, while the polyurethane bushes supplied in the kits carry a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects for the original vehicle. Our fitment guarantee means the kit you order suits the application or dimensions shown in the listing, and a 60-day returns window gives you time to confirm the fit. Our local support team can help with kit selection and fitting advice.
