Nolathane universal leaf spring bushes give mechanics, restorers and trailer owners a durable polyurethane replacement for worn spring eye and shackle bushes where a vehicle-specific kit is unavailable. Selected by size rather than make and model, they suit any leaf spring eye or shackle where the outer diameter, inner diameter and length match the original bush.
Each listing shows the bush dimensions and kit contents, making it easy to compare them with measurements taken from the spring eye, pin and shackle before ordering.
The Role of Leaf Spring Bushes
Leaf springs locate the axle and carry the load on many 4WDs, pick-ups, light trucks, trailers, caravans and older passenger cars. Each spring is attached to the chassis at a fixed hanger at one end and a swinging shackle at the other. As the spring compresses and flattens, its length changes, and the shackle swings to allow that movement.
Leaf spring bushes sit inside the spring eyes and shackle plates at each of these pivot points. They allow the spring and shackle to rotate smoothly, absorb vibration and keep the axle accurately located. Because the leaf spring also controls the axle?s position, worn bushes affect more than ride comfort; they can let the axle shift under braking, acceleration and cornering.
Signs of Worn Leaf Spring Bushings
Leaf spring bushes take constant load and movement, so wear is common on older or hard-working vehicles. Typical signs include:
- Clunking or knocking from the rear when moving off, braking or driving over bumps.
- Squeaks or groans from the spring eyes or shackles as the suspension moves.
- Vague or wandering handling, or a rear end that steps sideways over bumps.
- Axle wind-up or wheel hop under acceleration, particularly when towing or carrying a load.
- Cracked, split or extruded rubber visible at the spring eye, or a pin that sits off-centre in the eye.
- Uneven tyre wear or a vehicle that crabs (tracks slightly sideways) down the road.
Inspect the bushes with the vehicle on a hoist. Use a pry bar to check for movement between the spring eye and its pin, and look for rubber that has split or pushed out.
When Universal Leaf Spring Bushes Make Sense
A direct-fit kit is the easiest option when one is available. Universal leaf spring bushings are the practical choice for:
- Trailers, caravans, boat trailers and camper trailers that use common spring eye sizes.
- Classic and heritage vehicle restorations where original bushes are no longer produced.
- Custom builds and spring swaps where the springs and hangers come from different sources.
- Replacing individual bushes at a single pivot point rather than a full set.
- Workshops that need a fit-by-size option for vehicles outside the direct-fit catalogue.
Measuring for the Right Fit
Accurate measurement is the key to a good result with universal leaf spring bushes. Measure from the spring eye and pin, not just from the old bush, as worn rubber can distort.
Outer Diameter
The outer diameter (OD) must match the inside of the spring eye or shackle hanger. Measure the eye bore in several directions to check it has not worn oval.
Inner Diameter
The inner diameter (ID) must suit the centre sleeve or the pin. Check whether the original setup used a steel sleeve, and measure the bolt or pin diameter.
Length and Eye Width
The bush length must suit the width of the spring eye and the gap between the hanger or shackle plates. Most polyurethane leaf spring bushes are made as two flanged halves that press in from each side, with the flanges sitting against the hanger or shackle plates. Check the combined length suits the eye width and that the centre sleeve is the correct length so the pin can be tightened without crushing the bush.
If your measurements fall between sizes, our support team can help confirm the right option before you order.
Polyurethane Versus Rubber Leaf Spring Bushes
Most factory leaf spring bushes are bonded rubber. The rubber is fixed to both the inner sleeve and the outer shell, so as the spring moves, the rubber twists. Over time this repeated twisting, together with exposure to heat, oil, ozone and road grime, causes the rubber to crack, tear and separate.
Nolathane polyurethane bushes work differently. They are mechanically fitted with minimal crush, and the centre pin or sleeve is lubricated so the spring eye pivots freely around it. Because the bush is not being twisted with every movement, it lasts far longer and holds the spring and axle more accurately. Polyurethane also offers outstanding abrasion resistance, high load-bearing capability for towing and heavy loads, increased tensile strength and resistance to oil, grease, ozone and weathering.
Fitting Universal Leaf Spring Bushes
Support the vehicle or trailer securely and take the weight off the springs before removing the pins or shackle bolts. Old rubber bushes can be pressed out or carefully cut out, taking care not to damage the spring eye. Clean the eye thoroughly, removing rust and scale, and check it for cracks or excessive wear.
Apply a polyurethane-compatible bushing grease to the inside of the bushes and the outside of the sleeve before fitting. Press the two halves into the eye from either side, fit the sleeve and refit the pin. Tighten the nuts to the manufacturer?s torque specification, making sure the sleeve takes the clamping load rather than the bush itself.
Where the hanger or shackle has greasable pins, add grease after fitting and include the pivots in regular servicing. Re-check the fasteners after the first few hundred kilometres.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
Polyurethane leaf spring bushes are firmer than soft rubber, so slightly more road noise and vibration can reach the cabin or trailer body. On most vehicles this is minor and outweighed by the improved axle control and longer service life.
Polyurethane bushes rely on lubrication between the sleeve and bush. If they are fitted dry or not maintained in dusty or wet conditions, they can squeak. Regular inspection and re-greasing, particularly on vehicles used off road or on trailers that see beach or water crossings, keeps them quiet and working freely.
New bushes cannot compensate for worn pins, oval spring eyes, cracked hangers or sagging springs. Replace any worn hardware at the same time, and fit new springs if the vehicle sits low or the leaves are broken.
Compliance
Leaf spring bushes form part of the suspension and axle location, so any replacement must keep the vehicle or trailer safe and within the standards that apply where it is registered. In Europe, suspension condition is checked at the periodic roadworthiness inspection, and trailers may have separate requirements. Tell your insurer about any change to the suspension.
