Radiator Bushings for 1970 Oldsmobile 442 Base

Nolathane radiator bushings cushion your Oldsmobile 442's radiator where it sits in its upper and lower mounts. A radiator mount bushing keeps the core and tanks from resting directly on metal brackets, and it isolates the radiator from the vibration coming through the frame and engine. When those isolators crack or go missing, the radiator starts to shift, rattle, and wear against whatever it touches.

These radiator mounts suit classic cars being restored, performance vehicles, and commercial trucks, and they?re commonly renewed whenever the radiator comes out for cooling system work. Each listing shows the mount position, profile, and vehicles each radiator bushing fits.

How Radiator Mount Bushings Protect the Oldsmobile 442 Cooling System

A radiator is lighter and more fragile than most parts in the engine bay. Its core is made of thin tubes and fins, and its tanks are joined to the core at seams that don?t tolerate constant shaking. Radiator mount bushings protect it in three ways.

First, they absorb vibration. The engine, the road, and the frame all send a steady buzz forward, and a good isolator soaks it up before it reaches the core.

Second, they prevent metal-to-metal contact. Without a cushion, the radiator?s mounting pins and brackets rub directly against the core support, wearing through paint and eventually through metal.

Third, they hold the radiator in its intended position. That keeps the gap between the fan and the shroud even, so the fan doesn?t strike the shroud and the shroud seals properly for good airflow.

Oldsmobile 442 Radiator Mount Positions

Most radiators are held at the bottom and the top, and each position has a different job.

Lower Radiator Mounts

The lower mounts carry the radiator?s weight, including the coolant inside it. Pins or tabs on the bottom tank drop into isolators sitting in the core support. These bushings are under constant load, so they?re usually the first to flatten or split.

Upper Radiator Mounts and Isolators

At the top, brackets or clamps hold the upper tank in place, with isolators between the bracket and the radiator. They stop the radiator from tipping forward or back and keep it steady when your Oldsmobile 442 brakes or hits a bump.

Radiator Mounts and Radiator Support Bushings

Radiator mounts are not the same as radiator support bushings. Radiator support bushings sit between the core support and the frame on body-on-frame trucks and SUVs, and they?re part of the body mount system. This page covers the radiator?s own mounts.

Signs of Worn Radiator Bushings on Your Oldsmobile 442

Worn radiator isolators often go unnoticed until another problem shows up. Watch for:

• A radiator that moves by hand or rattles over bumps
• The fan touching or rubbing the shroud
• Cracked, hardened, flattened, or missing isolators
• Chafe marks or worn paint on the tanks or brackets
• Coolant weeping at the tank seams, where vibration has been found as the cause

Catching worn bushings early is far cheaper than replacing a radiator that has shaken a seam loose.

Rubber and Polyurethane Radiator Mounts for the Oldsmobile 442

Factory rubber radiator mounts are soft and quiet when new, but the engine bay is a harsh place for rubber. Constant heat cycling, oil mist, and ozone harden it, and once it hardens it cracks and stops absorbing vibration.

Polyurethane radiator insulators stand up better to that environment. They resist heat-related aging, oil, grease, ozone, and weathering, so they keep their shape and cushion far longer. The trade-off is that polyurethane is slightly firmer than fresh rubber. For a radiator mount, the hardness is chosen to cushion the core while still holding it firmly, so the radiator stays put without picking up harsh vibration.

Standard and Heavy-Duty Profiles

Radiators vary widely in size and weight. A small passenger car radiator puts far less load on its mounts than a large unit in a commercial truck or a high-output engine.

That?s why radiator bushings come in different profiles. Standard profiles suit typical passenger vehicles. Heavy-duty profiles are made for larger radiators, heavier commercial applications, and setups where the mounts see more load. The right profile depends on the radiator, the engine variant, and the mount design. Each listing shows the profile and the position it fits.

Choosing Radiator Bushings for Your Oldsmobile 442

Matching the right isolators comes down to a few details. Each listing shows the fitment information you need.

Vehicle and Engine Variant

Different engines in the same vehicle often use different radiators, and different radiators can use different mounts. Confirm the engine before ordering.

Mount Position and Profile

Check whether you need upper mounts, lower mounts, or both, and whether your radiator calls for a standard or heavy-duty profile.

Classic, Performance and Commercial Applications

Restorers usually need a part that matches the original mount design. Performance builds may run a larger radiator. Commercial trucks need isolators built for constant heavy use. Pick the listing that matches how your Oldsmobile 442 is used.

Replacing Radiator Bushings on Your Oldsmobile 442

Radiator bushing replacement is straightforward for anyone comfortable with cooling systems. Anyone unfamiliar with that work should use a qualified installer. The general process looks like this:

• Work with the engine fully cold, because hot coolant is under pressure
• Drain the radiator, or support it so it can?t drop
• Remove the upper brackets and lift the radiator out of its lower mounts
• Fit the new lower isolators, then set the radiator back in place
• Fit the new upper isolators and refit the brackets
• Tighten the brackets to specification without over-tightening, so the isolators aren?t crushed
• Check the gap between the fan and the shroud all the way around
• Refill and bleed the cooling system, then check for leaks once the engine reaches temperature

Oldsmobile 442 Radiator Bushing Limitations and Trade-Offs

Radiator bushings solve vibration and mounting problems, but they can?t fix everything:

• New bushings can?t repair a cracked tank, a leaking core, or broken brackets
• Polyurethane passes slightly more vibration than fresh rubber
• Over-tightening the brackets crushes the isolators and defeats their purpose
• They don?t change the radiator?s position or its cooling capacity

Compliance and Insurance

Radiator bushings are a like-for-like replacement, but your Oldsmobile 442 still needs to meet the inspection requirements of the state where it?s registered. If you?ve made other modifications, let your insurance company know.

Warranty and Support

Nolathane radiator isolators and bushings carry a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects in material and workmanship, for the original vehicle. If you?re not sure which profile or position you need, our local support team can help you find the right part.
