Engine Mount Bushings for 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS

Nolathane engine mount bushings sit inside the mounts that hold your Mitsubishi Eclipse's engine and transmission in place. Every engine mount bushing does three jobs at once: it carries the engine?s weight, resists the twisting force of torque reaction, and filters vibration before it reaches the cabin. When one of those jobs starts to slip, you feel it as a clunk, a shudder, or a buzz through the floor.

Polyurethane replacements hold their shape where factory rubber collapses, keeping the engine where it belongs. Each listing shows the mount position, the engine and transmission configuration, and whether each bushing suits your Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Three Jobs of a Mitsubishi Eclipse Engine Mount Bushing

The first job is supporting vertical load. An engine and transmission are heavy, and the mount bushings carry that weight every moment your Mitsubishi Eclipse is running, parked, or bouncing over rough roads.

The second job is resisting torque twist. When you accelerate, the engine tries to rotate opposite to the crankshaft. When you lift off and the engine braking takes over, it twists back the other way. The bushings resist both movements, so the engine rocks only a small amount instead of lurching on its mounts.

The third job is isolating vibration. An engine produces vibration across its whole rev range, from a gentle shake at idle to a high-frequency buzz at speed. The bushing absorbs as much of that as it can before it reaches the frame and cabin.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Engine and Transmission Mount Positions

Engines are held at several points, and each one sees a different mix of loads. Each listing shows the position each bushing fits.

Front and Side Mounts

These mounts carry much of the engine?s weight. On many layouts they sit on either side of the engine block and take the brunt of the torque reaction.

Rear and Transmission Mounts

The transmission mount supports the back of the driveline. It carries weight and helps control the driveline as torque passes through to the wheels.

Torque Arms and Torque Struts

On many front-engine layouts, a torque arm or torque strut links the engine to the body or subframe. Its job is to limit the engine?s rocking motion, and its bushings take a lot of repeated load.

Why Mitsubishi Eclipse Engine Mount Bushings Fail

Engine mount bushings live in one of the harshest places on the vehicle. Several things wear them out:

• Heat soak from the engine and exhaust, which ages rubber quickly
• Oil and coolant contamination from small leaks, which softens and breaks down rubber
• High torque from diesels and modified engines, which works the bushing harder on every launch
• Age, as rubber gradually hardens and cracks over the years
• Collapse or separation, where the rubber sags under load or tears away from its metal sleeve

Diagnosing a Worn Mitsubishi Eclipse Engine Mount Bushing

A few simple checks can usually confirm a worn engine mount bushing. Safety comes first: chock the wheels, keep everyone clear of the front of the vehicle, and have the helper keep the brakes firmly applied throughout.

• Watch the engine with the hood open while a helper shifts between drive and reverse with the brakes held on. A healthy mount lets the engine move slightly. A worn one lets it lurch or jump
• Listen for a clunk when getting on and off the throttle while driving
• Check for idle vibration, and whether it changes when the air conditioning switches on and adds load to the engine
• Inspect each mount for cracks, sagging, or rubber separating from the metal

If the engine moves a lot at one point, that?s usually the mount to replace.

Durometer, Vibration and Daily Comfort

Polyurethane comes in different hardness grades, measured as durometer. Each position on the engine is given a grade suited to its job, balancing how much movement it controls against how much vibration it passes through.

Firmer bushings hold the engine more tightly, so there?s less rocking and fewer clunks. The trade-off is that they pass more vibration into the cabin, especially at idle. Inserts and partial-fill designs offer a middle ground. They firm up the factory mount without fully solid-mounting the engine, which keeps more of the original comfort.

Mitsubishi Eclipse High-Torque, Towing and Diesel Applications

High-torque engines are especially hard on factory rubber. Diesels produce a lot of twisting force at low rpm, and towing keeps that force on the mounts for long periods. The heat from a working engine adds to the strain.

In those conditions, factory rubber wears quickly. Polyurethane holds its shape under high torque and resists oil and heat aging, so it keeps controlling engine movement where rubber would start to collapse.

Choosing Engine Mount Bushings for Your Mitsubishi Eclipse

Matching the right bushing depends on your engine and the mount you?re replacing. Each listing shows the details.

Engine Variant and Transmission Type

Different engines and transmissions in the same vehicle often use different mounts. Confirm both before ordering.

Position on the Mount

Check which mount and which part of it you?re replacing, whether front, side, rear, transmission, or torque strut.

Single Position or Complete Set

If one mount has failed, the others have usually aged too. Replacing a single position fixes the immediate problem, while a complete set brings the whole driveline back to even support.

Replacing Engine Mount Bushings on Your Mitsubishi Eclipse

Engine mount bushing replacement is best handled by a qualified installer. The general process looks like this:

• Support the engine and transmission with a jack and a wood block, or with an engine support bar
• Work on one mount at a time
• Press or fit the new bushings or inserts
• Tighten all fasteners to specification
• Check clearance to the fan, hoses, exhaust, and shifter linkage
• Check the torque again after the first drive

Limitations and Trade-Offs

Engine mount bushings fix worn mounts, but they have limits:

• Expect more idle vibration and noise in the cabin than with soft rubber
• Fluid-filled factory mounts give a different feel, so polyurethane won?t match it exactly
• New bushings can?t fix a cracked mount bracket or a broken mount housing
• Driveline vibration can come from elsewhere, such as the U-joints, CV joints, or driveshaft angle

Compliance and Insurance

Make sure your Mitsubishi Eclipse meets the inspection requirements of the state where it?s registered, including engine swap rules where conversion sets are used. Let your insurance company know about any modifications.

Warranty and Support

Nolathane engine mount bushings and inserts carry a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects in material and workmanship, for the original vehicle. Complete sets and assemblies with metal parts are backed by Nolathane?s warranty. Our local support team can help you match the right bushing.
