Nolathane transmission parts are the mounts and bushings that hold, locate and shift the transmission. This range doesn?t include internal gearbox parts such as gears, clutches or rebuild kits. It covers the parts around the transmission: mounts, crossmember bushings, torque arm mounts and shifter bushings.
These parts control how the transmission moves under torque and how cleanly the shifter works. When they wear, the result is clunks, vibration and a sloppy shift. Each listing shows the position, the parts included and the vehicle fitment.
How the Transmission Is Mounted and Located
The transmission is bolted to the back of the engine, and the two are supported as one unit. At the rear of the transmission, a mount sits on a crossmember that spans the chassis. That mount carries the weight of the transmission and isolates the vibration.
Because the engine and transmission twist under torque, other parts control that movement. Torque arms and steady rods limit the twist and the fore-aft movement when you accelerate and brake. The shifter connects to the transmission through a shift linkage that pivots on small bushings. Every one of these connections relies on a bushing to locate it.
Transmission Mounting Positions
Each listing shows the position.
Transmission Mounts and Mount Bushings
The transmission mount is the main support at the rear of the transmission. On many vehicles, the bushing inside it can be replaced on its own, without replacing the whole mount.
Transmission Crossmember Bushings and Pads
Transmission crossmember bushings and pads sit between the crossmember and the chassis, or between the mount and the crossmember. They locate the crossmember and stop it from rattling or shifting.
Torque Arm Mounts and Steady Rod Bushings
A torque arm mount controls how much the transmission twists under acceleration. Steady rod bushings limit the fore-aft movement. Both cut down the thud you feel when you get on and off the throttle.
Lower Torque Mounts on FWD and AWD Vehicles
On front-wheel-drive and many all-wheel-drive vehicles, the engine and transmission sit across the engine bay. A lower torque mount, often called a dog bone, controls how the whole unit rocks under load.
Shifter and Positive-Shift Bushings
Worn shifter bushings add slop, so the shifter feels vague and the gates are hard to find. Polyurethane positive-shift bushings reduce the free play in the shift linkage, which gives a firmer, more precise gate feel. They?re among the most popular manual transmission parts for drivers who want a tighter shift. The Shifter Bushings range covers them in more detail.
Signs of Worn Transmission Mounts and Bushings
Watch for:
- A clunk when shifting into drive or reverse
- A thud when you get on and off the throttle
- Vibration through the floor or the shifter
- A vague or sloppy shifter
- The transmission visibly moving under load
- Cracked or collapsed rubber in the mounts
Rubber and Polyurethane Transmission Bushings
Rubber transmission bushings are soft, which helps them absorb vibration. But they sit close to engine heat and leaking oil, both of which break rubber down. As rubber softens and cracks, the transmission is free to move more.
Polyurethane is firmer, so it locates the transmission more precisely and controls the movement under torque. It resists oil, grease and weathering, which suits the conditions under a vehicle. Nolathane chooses the durometer (hardness) for each position, to balance location against comfort.
Firmer bushings do pass more vibration into the cabin than rubber, especially at idle. That?s the trade-off for a more precise feel.
Choosing Transmission Parts
Each listing shows the position, the parts included and the vehicle fitment.
Manual or Automatic Transmission
Mounts and crossmember bushings suit both manual and automatic transmissions. Positive-shift bushings suit manuals and some automatic shifters, so check the listing for your vehicle.
Drivetrain Layout
On rear-wheel-drive and 4WD vehicles, the transmission sits lengthwise with a rear mount on a crossmember. On front-wheel-drive and many all-wheel-drive vehicles, it sits across the engine bay with a torque mount. Choose parts to suit your layout.
Bushing Kit or Complete Mount Assembly
If the mount?s housing is in good condition, a bushing kit restores it. If the housing is damaged or corroded, a complete mount assembly is the better choice.
Fitting Transmission Mounts and Bushings
- Support the transmission and engine safely before removing anything
- Work on one mount at a time, so the drivetrain stays located
- Note the orientation of each part, especially torque arm mounts with directional lips
- Torque all fasteners to specification
- Check the clearance to the driveshaft, exhaust and shift linkage
- Re-check everything after the first drive
Qualified fitting is recommended.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
- Firmer mounts pass more vibration into the cabin
- These parts can?t fix internal transmission problems, a worn clutch, worn U-joints or CV joints, or driveline angle issues
- Positive-shift bushings firm up the shift feel, but they can?t repair worn synchros
Compliance and Insurance
Make sure your vehicle meets the inspection requirements of the state where it?s registered, and tell your insurance company about any modifications.
