Nolathane transfer case bushings support the transfer case where it mounts to the vehicle on 4WD and 4x4 trucks, SUVs, and pickups. Each transfer case bushing cushions the transfer case mount, holding the unit steady while isolating driveline vibration from the frame and cabin.
When transfer case mount bushings wear, the transfer case can shift under load, sending clunks and vibration through the drivetrain. Replacing them restores firm, quiet support. Each listing shows the position, the transfer case configuration, and the vehicles each kit fits.
The Transfer Case and Its Supporting Bushings
The transfer case sits behind the transmission on a 4WD or 4x4 vehicle. Its job is to split drive between the front and rear axles. On part-time 4WD systems, it lets the driver switch between two-wheel and four-wheel drive. On full-time systems, it sends power to both axles all the time.
The transfer case carries a lot of torque, especially in low range, and it?s connected to both driveshafts. It?s supported by a mount, usually on a crossmember, along with the transmission it bolts to. The bushings in that mount hold the transfer case in position and absorb the vibration and torque reactions coming through the driveline.
The transfer case is also shifted between ranges, either by a lever and linkage or electronically. The linkage has its own bushings, which are a separate part from the mount bushings.
Transfer Case Bushing Positions
Transfer case bushings are made for the mounting points that support the unit. Each listing shows the positions included.
Transfer Case Mount Bushings
These sit in the transfer case mount or crossmember position. They carry the weight of the transfer case and resist its torque reactions, while isolating vibration from the frame.
Signs of Worn Transfer Case Bushings
Worn transfer case mount bushings usually show up as noise and vibration from the drivetrain. Watch for:
- A clunk when engaging 4WD
- A clunk when getting on or off the throttle
- Driveline vibration, especially under load or in low range
- The transfer case visibly shifting when the drivetrain is loaded
- Cracked, separated, or flattened mount bushings
If your shift lever feels sloppy or the transfer case is hard to select a range, check the shift linkage bushings too. They?re a separate part and a common cause of those symptoms.
Why Transfer Case Bushing Wear Matters
When the transfer case mount bushings wear, the unit can move more than it should under load. That movement changes the angles of the driveshafts, which puts extra load on the driveshafts and U-joints and can cause vibration.
The extra movement also speeds up wear on the mounts themselves and on the linkage that shifts the transfer case. Over time, a loose transfer case can make 4WD engagement less reliable, which matters most off-road and when towing.
Rubber and Polyurethane Transfer Case Bushings
Factory rubber transfer case bushings are soft, which helps isolate vibration. But they sit close to the drivetrain, where oil and heat break rubber down quickly. Once it softens or cracks, the transfer case starts to move.
Polyurethane transfer case bushings offer firmer support and resist oil, grease, ozone, and weathering, so they hold their shape in that harsh position. The hardness, or durometer, is chosen to locate the transfer case firmly while still absorbing vibration.
The trade-off is slightly more drivetrain vibration, since polyurethane is firmer than soft rubber.
Choosing Transfer Case Bushings
Choosing the right kit depends on your transfer case setup. Each listing shows the details.
Transfer Case Type and Position
Confirm your transfer case configuration and the mount position before ordering. Different transfer cases in the same vehicle range can use different mounts.
Shaft or Bolt Inside Diameter
Where size variants exist, match the inside diameter to the mounting bolt or shaft. Each listing shows the inside diameter.
Fitting During a Rebuild or Mount Service
Transfer case mount bushings are easiest to replace when the transfer case or transmission is already being serviced. Fitting them during a rebuild or mount service saves doing the job twice.
Fitting Transfer Case Bushings
Drivetrain work is best handled by a qualified installer. The general process looks like this:
- Support the transmission and transfer case safely before removing any mounts
- Remove the old mount bushings
- Fit the new bushings as the listing directs
- Tighten all fasteners to specification
- Check the driveline angles after the mount work is complete
Limitations and Trade-Offs
Transfer case bushings restore firm support, but they have limits:
- New bushings can?t fix internal transfer case wear, worn chains or bearings, or worn U-joints
- Polyurethane transmits slightly more drivetrain vibration than rubber
- Fitment is specific to the listed transfer case configurations
Compliance and Insurance
Make sure the vehicle meets the inspection requirements of the state where it?s registered, and let your insurance company know about any modifications.
Warranty and Support
Nolathane transfer case bushings carry a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects in material and workmanship, for the original vehicle. If you?re not sure which kit suits your transfer case, our local support team can help.
