Nolathane universal sway bar links give workshops, DIY mechanics and performance drivers a broad choice of replacement and upgrade links for the E89 Z4 front and rear sway bars. The range covers fixed links, adjustable links, cut-to-length and threaded rod styles, along with replacement link bushes and washers, so you can restore a firm, quiet connection between the sway bar and the suspension or correct link geometry after a ride height change.
Each listing shows the link style, length, stud size and joint orientation, along with the kit contents, so you can match the link to your vehicle or to measurements taken from the original part.
The Role of Sway Bar Links
A sway bar, also called an anti-roll bar or stabiliser bar, connects the left and right sides of the suspension to reduce body roll. The bar mounts to the chassis, and a sway bar link (end link) connects each end of the bar to the control arm (wishbone), strut or axle.
When the vehicle leans in a corner, the links transfer suspension movement into the sway bar, which twists and resists the roll. Because every input to the bar passes through the links, their condition directly affects how quickly and accurately the sway bar responds. A worn or loose link delays that response, allowing more body roll and making the vehicle feel less settled.
Types of E89 Z4 Sway Bar Links
Fixed Ball-Joint Links
The most common modern design uses a fixed-length body with a ball joint at each end. The ball joints allow the link to articulate as the suspension moves and the wheels steer. The angle between the two ball studs, or joint orientation, must match the original link so the link sits correctly at both mounts.
Adjustable Sway Bar Links
Adjustable links have a threaded body that allows the length to be set precisely. They are used on lifted or lowered vehicles where the standard link length no longer places the sway bar at its correct angle, and on performance vehicles where links are set to remove preload from the bar.
Cut-to-Length Links
Cut-to-length links use ball studs on a long body that can be trimmed to suit the application. They are useful where a direct-fit link is unavailable, such as on custom builds, conversions and older vehicles.
Threaded Rod and Bush-Style Links
These links use a threaded rod or bolt with polyurethane bushes and cupped washers clamped on either side of the sway bar eye and lower mount. This simple, robust design is common on older vehicles, 4WDs and utes (pick-ups), and the bushes and washers can be replaced separately as they wear.
Signs of Worn E89 Z4 Sway Bar Links
Sway bar links are one of the most common sources of suspension noise and are often mistaken for worn shock absorbers or ball joints. Typical signs include:
- A knocking or clunking noise over speed bumps, driveways and uneven roads, especially at low speed.
- Rattling over small, sharp bumps or corrugations.
- Increased body roll or a vague, delayed response when turning in.
- A split or missing rubber boot on a ball joint, allowing dirt and water in.
- Play in the ball joint or a link body that is bent, cracked or snapped.
- Worn, cracked or missing bushes on bush-style links.
To check the links, grab each link and try to move it by hand. Any knocking, free play or looseness in the joints or bushes indicates wear. Links should also be inspected after any heavy impact, as a bent body can affect sway bar geometry.
Adjustable Links for a Lifted or Lowered E89 Z4
When ride height changes, the distance between the sway bar and its lower mounting point changes too. On a lifted 4WD, standard links may hold the sway bar at a steep angle, reducing its effectiveness and potentially causing the bar or links to contact other components at full extension. On a lowered car, the bar can sit too close to the chassis or reach awkward angles at full compression.
Adjustable sway bar links allow the length to be set so the bar sits at the correct angle at the new ride height. They also allow both sides to be set evenly with the vehicle at ride height, so the bar carries no preload. A sway bar that is twisted at rest can make the vehicle lean slightly or behave differently in left and right corners, so even adjustment is important for balanced handling.
Measuring for the Right Fit
Universal and adjustable links are selected by their dimensions. Before ordering, measure or check:
- Length: the centre-to-centre distance between the mounting points, or the required length range for an adjustable link.
- Stud diameter: the size of the ball stud or bolt at each end.
- Joint orientation: the angle between the two ball studs for fixed ball-joint links.
- Mounting style: ball stud, bolt-through eye or threaded rod with bushes.
Compare your measurements with each listing. Where a link is vehicle-specific, check the fitting position and suitability shown in the listing.
Fitting Sway Bar Links on Your E89 Z4
Support the vehicle securely. On many vehicles, links are easiest to fit with the suspension at normal ride height, either on the ground or on drive-on ramps, so the sway bar is not loaded when the nuts are tightened.
For ball-joint links, hold the stud with the appropriate hex or Torx key while tightening the nut, to stop the ball spinning in its socket. Tighten to the manufacturer?s torque specification and use new locking nuts where supplied. For bush-style links, fit the bushes and cupped washers in the correct order, lubricate them with polyurethane-compatible bushing grease, and tighten until the sleeve is clamped or the bushes are firmly compressed without crushing them.
For adjustable links, set both sides to the same starting length, fit them at ride height and adjust so each link fits without pulling or pushing the bar. Lock the adjusters securely. After fitting, turn the steering from lock to lock and cycle the suspension where possible to check the links, ball joints and boots clear the brake lines, wheels, springs and chassis.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
Replacement links restore the connection between the sway bar and the suspension, but they do not change the sway bar?s stiffness. Where more roll control is needed, a thicker or adjustable sway bar may be required.
Heavy-duty joints and firmer bushes can transmit slightly more noise and vibration than soft original parts. Ball-joint links rely on intact boots to keep dirt and water out, so damaged boots shorten their life. Bush-style links need lubricated bushes and correct washers to stay quiet.
Worn sway bar mount bushes, a bent sway bar or damaged mounting brackets will still cause noise and play, so inspect the whole system when replacing links.
Compliance
Sway bars and links affect vehicle stability, so any repair or modification must keep the vehicle safe and within the standards that apply where it is registered. In Australia, requirements vary between states and territories, particularly for lifted or lowered vehicles and changes to sway bars. In the UK and Europe, suspension condition is checked at the MOT or periodic roadworthiness inspection. Tell your insurer about any suspension modification.
Nolathane Suspension Experience
Nolathane has been making polyurethane suspension bushings since 1974, originally developed to replace brass bushes in hillclimb competition. More than 50 years on, that experience extends to complete suspension components, including sway bar links built to replace worn original parts and support modified vehicles. Bush-style links use signature red polyurethane bushes made in durometers selected for each application, offering high load-bearing capability, abrasion resistance and resistance to oil, grease, ozone and weathering.
Warranty and Support
Complete Nolathane sway bar links are covered by a warranty of 3 years or 60,000 km (36,000 miles), whichever comes first, against manufacturing defects in material and workmanship. Nolathane sway bar link bushes are covered by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, for the original vehicle they are fitted to. Our fitment guarantee means the link you order suits the application or dimensions shown in the listing, and a 60-day returns window gives you time to confirm the fit. Our local support team can help with link selection, length settings and fitting advice, whether you are fixing a clunk, setting up a lifted 4WD or sharpening handling.
