Nolathane Watts link bushings renew the pivots that keep a rear axle centered under the vehicle. A Watts link uses a center pivot on the axle and two lateral links to the body, and every one of those joints relies on a bushing. A Watts link bushing kit restores firm, quiet location at the center pivot and both link ends.
When these bushings wear, the rear axle starts to shift sideways in corners and over bumps, and the rear end loses its planted feel. Each listing shows the positions included and the vehicles each kit fits.
How a Watts Link Locates the Rear Axle
A solid rear axle needs something to stop it moving side to side. A Watts link does that with three main parts. A center pivot, sometimes called a bell crank or propeller, mounts to the rear axle housing and can rotate. Two lateral links run from each end of that pivot out to the body or chassis, one on each side.
As the axle moves up and down, the center pivot rotates and the two links swing in opposite directions. Their movements cancel out sideways, so the center of the axle stays very close to centered through its whole range of travel.
That?s why Watts link suspension is popular on performance and RWD vehicles. In Watts link rear suspension, the axle stays where it should during cornering, braking, and bumps, which keeps the rear end predictable.
Watts Link and Panhard Bar Compared
A panhard bar, also called a panhard rod or track bar, is the simpler way to locate an axle sideways. It?s a single bar running from one side of the axle to the opposite side of the body.
Because a panhard bar pivots at each end, it swings through an arc as the suspension moves. That arc pulls the axle slightly to one side as it rises and falls, so the rear end shifts sideways a little through its travel.
A Watts link keeps the axle much closer to centered, which gives more consistent handling, especially on uneven roads and through corners. The trade-offs are that a Watts link has more parts, more bushings to maintain, and needs more packaging space under the vehicle. A panhard bar is simpler and cheaper to build, which is why both designs are still widely used.
Watts Link Bushing Positions
A Watts link has bushings at the center pivot and at each end of the lateral links. Each listing shows the positions included.
Center Pivot Bushings
The center pivot mounts to the axle housing and rotates as the suspension moves. Its bushings let it turn freely while holding it firmly on the axle.
Link End Bushings
Each lateral link has a bushing at both ends, one where it meets the center pivot and one where it meets the body or chassis. These carry the sideways loads that keep the axle centered.
Signs of Worn Watts Link Bushings
Worn Watts link bushings usually show up as noise and a loose rear end. Watch for:
- A clunk from the rear over bumps or when changing direction
- The rear end shifting sideways or feeling vague in corners
- Uneven wear on the rear tires
- Cracked or extruded bushings at the center pivot or link ends
- Visible sideways axle movement when someone rocks the body from side to side
That last check is useful. With the vehicle on its wheels, have someone push the body from side to side while you watch the axle and the link ends. Any movement at the bushings means they?re worn.
Rubber and Polyurethane Watts Link Bushings
Factory rubber Watts link bushings are soft for a quiet ride, but they give way under cornering load. That lets the axle shift before the Watts link can hold it, which undoes some of the linkage?s benefit.
Polyurethane Watts link bushings hold the axle more firmly in position sideways. They resist abrasion and stand up to oil, grease, ozone, and weathering, so they keep their shape for longer. The hardness, or durometer, is chosen for each position to balance firm location with vibration control.
The trade-off is a little more road feel, since polyurethane passes slightly more vibration than soft rubber.
Benefits for Cornering and Stability
With fresh polyurethane bushings, a Watts link keeps the rear axle more consistently centered. The rear end responds more sharply to direction changes, because there?s less give before the linkage takes up the load.
Behavior under braking and on uneven roads also becomes steadier, since the axle stays closer to where the Watts link is designed to hold it. These gains are about consistency rather than transforming how the vehicle drives, but on a car that?s done many miles, the difference is often easy to feel.
Choosing Watts Link Bushings
Choosing the right kit depends on how much of the linkage needs attention. Each listing shows the options.
Complete Bushing Set or Individual Bushings
A complete set covers the center pivot and all link ends. Individual bushings suit a single worn position, though the others usually wear at a similar rate.
Listing Options and Vehicle Search
Use the vehicle search to find the kits that suit your vehicle, and check the listing for the positions included.
Link and Pivot Condition
Before rebushing, check the links for bends and the center pivot shaft for wear. Bent links or a worn pivot won?t be fixed by new bushings.
Fitting Watts Link Bushings
Qualified fitting is recommended for Watts link bushings. The general process looks like this:
- Support the vehicle safely, with the axle at ride height
- Remove the links and center pivot as your vehicle?s design requires
- Press or fit the new bushings and sleeves
- Grease the bushings as specified
- Refit everything and tighten to specification at ride height
- Check the rear alignment where applicable
Check the torque again after the first few hundred miles.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
Watts link bushings restore firm lateral location, but they have limits:
- Polyurethane transmits slightly more noise and vibration than rubber
- It can squeak if it isn?t greased
- New bushings can?t fix bent links, a worn pivot shaft or bearing, or worn trailing arm or control arm bushings
- A Watts link improves lateral location only, not ride height or roll stiffness
Compliance and Insurance
Make sure the vehicle meets the inspection requirements of the state where it?s registered, and let your insurance company know about any suspension modifications.
