Nolathane exhaust mount bushings come as kits that renew the isolators holding your exhaust system to the chassis. Each exhaust insulator sits at an exhaust mount along the system, from the front pipe back to the tailpipe. Replacing them as a set brings back even support along the whole exhaust.
A single failed mount is often the first sign that the rest are close behind. Renewing every position at once stops sag, rattles, and drone in one job. Each listing shows the positions included and the vehicles each kit fits.
Exhaust Mount Positions Along the System
An exhaust system is held at several points between the engine and the tailpipe. Each listing shows which positions the kit covers.
Front Pipe and Transmission Mounts
At the front, the exhaust often has a mount near the transmission or on the front pipe. This mount is closest to the engine, so it sees the most movement from engine rock.
Mid-Pipe and Resonator Mounts
Further back, mounts support the mid-pipe and resonator. They carry the weight of the middle section and keep it clear of the floor and driveline.
Muffler and Tailpipe Mounts
At the rear, mounts hold the muffler and tailpipe. The muffler is one of the heaviest parts of the exhaust, so these mounts carry a lot of weight and are a common source of sag and knocking.
Pinpointing a Failed Exhaust Mount
When an exhaust rattles or sags, finding the failed mount saves guesswork. With the exhaust fully cold:
- Look at each exhaust isolator for stretching, cracks, or sagging
- Rock the exhaust gently by hand and watch which mount allows the most movement
- Look for contact marks on the heat shields, floor, and body, which show where the exhaust has been hitting
- Match the location of the noise to the nearest mount
A rattle from the rear usually points to the muffler or tailpipe mounts, while a knock under the middle of the vehicle points to the mid-pipe or resonator mounts.
Engine Mounts, Exhaust Mounts and Drone
Exhaust mounts and engine mounts are connected in a way that?s easy to miss. The exhaust bolts to the engine, so when the engine rocks, it pulls the exhaust with it.
When engine mounts wear, the engine rocks further. That repeatedly stretches the exhaust isolators, wearing them out faster. Worn exhaust mounts then let the system swing and touch the body, which adds to drone and vibration in the cabin.
That?s why both often need attention together. If you?re replacing worn exhaust mounts and the engine visibly rocks, check the engine mounts too.
Renewing Every Exhaust Mount at Once
Replacing one exhaust mount at a time is tempting, but a full kit usually makes more sense.
When only one mount is renewed, the new isolator holds firm while the old ones around it still sag. The exhaust is supported unevenly, which puts stress on the joints and flanges between sections and can lead to leaks.
Renewing every mount at once gives even support along the whole system. The exhaust sits where it should, the joints aren?t strained, and the work is done in one job instead of several.
Fitting Mounts With a New or Aftermarket Exhaust
Fitting a new muffler or a cat-back exhaust is the ideal time to renew the mounts. The old isolators are often stretched, and fitting them to a new system just carries the problem forward.
With an aftermarket exhaust, check that the hanger rods line up with the factory brackets. Then confirm clearance with the engine moving through its full range, since the exhaust will move with it.
Polyurethane Exhaust Insulators
Rubber exhaust insulators stretch over time. Once they do, the exhaust sags and swings. Polyurethane holds its shape, so the exhaust stays where it was fitted, and it resists oil, ozone, and weathering.
Polyurethane does have heat limits. It suits the cooler mount positions along the exhaust, rather than the hottest sections near the manifold or catalytic converter, unless the listing says otherwise.
Choosing an Exhaust Mount Bushing Kit
Choosing the right kit depends on your vehicle and exhaust. Each listing shows the details.
Vehicle and Exhaust Configuration
Use the vehicle search to find the kit that matches your vehicle and its exhaust layout.
Positions Included
Check which mounts the kit covers, so you know whether it renews the full system or a section of it.
Factory or Aftermarket Exhaust
If you?ve fitted an aftermarket exhaust, confirm that its hanger rods match the profile of the kit.
Fitting Exhaust Mount Bushings
Qualified fitting is recommended for exhaust work. The general process looks like this:
- Work with the exhaust fully cold
- Support the exhaust so it can?t drop
- Replace one mount at a time, so the system stays supported
- Fit each insulator using a suitable lubricant
- Check clearance to the body and heat shields
- Check again after the first few heat cycles
Inspecting Exhaust Mounts
Exhaust mounts are worth a quick look at every oil change, when the vehicle is already in the air. Check them again during any exhaust work, and after off-road driving or an impact that may have loaded the exhaust.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
Exhaust mount bushings fix sag and rattles, but they have limits:
- Firmer insulators may transmit slightly more vibration than soft rubber
- They?re not for the hottest positions near the manifold or catalytic converter unless the listing says so
- New mounts can?t fix exhaust leaks, broken hanger rods or brackets, or drone caused by the exhaust design itself
Compliance and Insurance
Your exhaust must still meet the noise, emissions, and inspection rules of the state where the vehicle is registered. Let your insurance company know about any modifications.
