Nolathane diff drop kits lower the front differential on lifted 4x4s with independent front suspension. A differential drop kit moves the diff down by a set amount, so the CV axles run at a flatter angle after a lift. That reduces strain on the CV joints and boots and helps them last.
A diff drop is one of the most common add-ons when lifting an IFS pickup or SUV, because a lift changes the angle the front axles run at. Each listing shows the design, drop amount, and vehicles each kit fits.
Purpose of a Diff Drop Kit
On an IFS 4x4, the front differential is bolted to the frame, and a CV axle runs from each side of it out to the wheel hub. A diff drop kit lowers that differential, usually with spacers or brackets, so its output points sit closer in height to the hubs.
That?s the whole idea of a diff drop. By bringing the differential down, the kit flattens the angle of the CV axles, so the CV joints don?t have to work at such a steep angle.
How Lifting Affects CV Joint Angles
When you lift an IFS 4x4, the suspension holds the wheel hubs lower relative to the frame. The front differential, being frame-mounted, stays where it was. The CV axles now have to angle down more steeply to reach the hubs.
CV joints are designed to work through a certain range of angles. Running them at a steeper angle all the time increases wear, especially at full suspension travel and full steering lock. The results can include:
- Faster wear on the CV joints
- Split CV boots, which let grease out and dirt in
- Clicking from the CV joints when turning
- Vibration from the front driveline
When a Diff Drop Is Needed
Whether you need a diff drop depends on several factors, not one fixed lift height. The main ones are:
- The lift method and the lift height for your particular vehicle
- The design of the vehicle?s IFS
- The CV angle at the new ride height
- How the vehicle is used, whether mostly off-road or mostly on the street
Because these vary between vehicles, there?s no single lift height where a diff drop becomes necessary. Your vehicle?s specification and the kit listing are the best guide.
Spacer and Bracket Diff Drop Designs
Diff drop kits come in two main designs. Each listing shows the design and the drop amount.
Spacer Drops
Spacer drops fit between the differential and its mounts, lowering it by the thickness of the spacers. They?re usually simple and compact.
Bracket Drops
Bracket drops replace or extend the mounting points with differential drop brackets. They suit vehicles where spacers alone won?t fit the mounting design.
Benefits for Lifted 4x4s
A diff drop reduces stress on the CV joints and boots by flattening their working angle. The front driveline runs more smoothly, especially at full steering lock, where CV angles are at their worst.
For touring, towing, and off-road trucks that put a lot of miles and articulation through the front end, that can mean longer CV life and fewer boot repairs. A diff drop won?t make an extreme lift trouble-free, but it gives the CV joints a better working angle.
Choosing a Diff Drop Kit
Choosing the right kit depends on your vehicle and your lift. Each listing shows the details.
IFS Vehicle Fitment
Diff drop kits are specific to the vehicle?s IFS design. Use the vehicle search to find the kits that suit your 4x4 or pickup.
Lift Height Suitability
Check that the kit?s drop amount suits your lift. The listing shows what the kit is designed for.
Skid Plate and Crossmember Clearance
Lowering the differential can affect how the skid plate, also called a bash plate, and the crossmember fit. Check the listing for any notes on clearance or modification.
Fitting a Diff Drop Kit
Diff drop installation is best handled by a qualified installer. The general process looks like this:
- Support the vehicle safely on stands
- Remove the skid plate
- Support the front differential
- Fit the spacers or brackets with the supplied hardware
- Tighten everything to specification
- Check the CV axles, boots, breather hose, and wiring for clearance
- Refit the skid plate, modifying it if the listing says it?s needed
- Have a wheel alignment carried out, since the vehicle has been lifted
Check the torque again after the first few hundred miles.
Parts to Check Alongside a Diff Drop
When fitting a diff drop, it?s worth checking the parts that work alongside it:
- CV axles and boots, for wear or splits caused by running at a steep angle
- Upper control arms, which may need attention after a lift
- Wheel alignment, which changes with any lift
- The skid plate, which may need modifying to clear the lowered differential
Limitations and Trade-Offs
A diff drop kit is a useful addition to a lift, but it has limits:
- It reduces ground clearance under the differential
- It doesn?t fix worn CV joints or cure every vibration
- It doesn?t correct suspension geometry or alignment
- Very large lifts may need other solutions
- Some skid plates need modifying to fit
Compliance and Insurance
Make sure the vehicle meets the lift and inspection rules of the state where it?s registered, and let your insurance company know about any modifications.
