A Nolathane camber bolt kit replaces a factory suspension bolt with an eccentric one, adding camber adjustment where the factory setup has little or none. Camber adjustment bolts are a practical fix when an alignment can?t bring the wheels back to specification after a lift, a lowering job, or replacing suspension parts.
Getting the right kit comes down to matching the bolt to your vehicle. This page explains what?s in a kit, how to measure your factory bolt, and how many you?ll need. Each listing shows the bolt diameter, position, and contents.
What a Camber Bolt Kit Contains
A typical camber bolt kit includes three main parts. The first is the eccentric bolt itself, which has an offset section that moves the mounting point as it?s turned. The second is a cam washer, or an offset section built into the bolt, which works with the bolt to create the adjustment. The third is a nut that locks everything in place once the camber is set.
Kits vary in exactly what they include and how many bolts come in each. Each listing shows the exact contents and quantity, so you know what you?re getting before you order.
Sized Kits and Vehicle-Specific Kits
Camber bolt kits come in two forms.
Sized kits are matched by bolt diameter. Because many vehicles use the same bolt size at the same type of mount, one sized kit can suit a wide range of vehicles. They?re a good choice when you know your bolt diameter, or when you?re working on a vehicle with no specific kit available. Sized kits are guaranteed to match the dimensions shown in the listing.
Vehicle-specific kits are matched to a particular mounting point on a particular vehicle. They take the guesswork out of sizing, since the kit has already been chosen for that application.
Measuring Your Factory Bolt
If you?re choosing a sized kit, measuring the factory bolt correctly is the most important step.
Bolt Diameter
Measure the diameter of the bolt?s shank, the smooth unthreaded section, using calipers. Don?t measure across the thread, which gives a slightly different reading. The shank diameter is what needs to match the hole in the mount.
Thread Pitch and Length
Check the thread pitch, which is the spacing of the threads, so the new nut matches. Measure the bolt?s length too, so the camber bolt is long enough to pass through the mount with enough thread for the nut.
Mounting Position
Note where the bolt came from, whether it?s a strut-to-knuckle bolt or a lower control arm inner bolt. The position decides which type of kit you need.
Camber Adjustment Bolts by Position
Camber adjustment bolts are made for specific mounting positions. Each listing shows the position.
Strut-to-Knuckle Positions
On many passenger cars, the strut bolts to the steering knuckle with two bolts. Replacing one of them with a camber bolt lets the knuckle tilt slightly, adjusting camber at the strut.
Lower Control Arm Inner Positions
On some vehicles, camber is adjusted at the inner mount of the lower control arm. A camber bolt here moves the arm?s pivot in or out, which changes the wheel?s camber.
How Many Camber Bolts You Need
The number of bolts depends on the suspension design. Some vehicles need one camber bolt per side, while others use two.
Even if only one side is out of specification, it?s usually best to fit bolts on both sides of the axle. That lets the alignment technician adjust both wheels and set them evenly. Each listing shows the quantity included.
Hardware Grade and Safety
Camber bolts hold critical suspension parts together, so strength matters. Every camber bolt must match or exceed the strength of the factory bolt it replaces.
Never reuse a stretched factory bolt. Suspension bolts can stretch when they?re torqued, and a stretched bolt may not hold its clamp. Fit new nuts wherever the specification calls for them.
Fitting Checklist
Camber bolts are best fitted by a qualified installer. The general process looks like this:
- Support the vehicle safely on stands
- Replace one bolt at a time, so the suspension stays located
- Fit the camber bolt snug, but not fully tight
- Lower the vehicle and set it at ride height
- Adjust the camber at the alignment rack
- Tighten the bolts to specification
- Check the torque again after the first drive
Limitations and Trade-Offs
Camber bolt kits are a simple fix, but they have limits:
- The adjustment range is modest
- They can?t fix bent struts, knuckles, or arms, or worn bushings and ball joints
- An under-torqued bolt can slip and lose its setting
- The wrong diameter can damage the mount
Compliance and Insurance
Make sure the vehicle meets the inspection requirements of the state where it?s registered, including lift and lowering rules. Let your insurance company know about any modifications.
