A rod end is the part that forms the end of a suspension link, carrying the bushing that lets the link pivot at its mount. Nolathane rod ends are forged rod ends for fabricators building custom suspension links, track bars and steering links on 4x4 builds, custom trucks and race cars, wherever a factory link won?t do the job.
Each rod end has a strong forged body with a bore sized to take a polyurethane bushing and inner sleeve. That makes it a bushed rod end, which is quieter and better suited to road use than a spherical joint. Each listing shows the outside diameter, inside diameter and length.
What a Rod End Is
A rod end turns a length of tube into a working suspension link. One end of the rod end attaches to the link tube. The other is a round housing with a bore through it, which takes a bushing and an inner sleeve. A bolt passes through the sleeve to mount the link to the chassis or axle bracket.
Nolathane rod ends are forged. Forging gives the body a dense, continuous grain structure, which makes it strong and resistant to fatigue. That matters, because a rod end on a suspension link carries heavy loads in tension and compression, and it?s worked back and forth with every movement of the suspension.
How the rod end attaches to the link depends on its design, either welded into the tube or threaded into it. The listing shows the attachment method.
Bushed Rod Ends and Heim Joints Compared
Builders choosing a rod end usually compare two types: bushed rod ends and heim joints.
A bushed rod end uses a polyurethane bushing in the housing. The bushing absorbs vibration and road noise, so a vehicle built with bushed rod ends is quieter and more comfortable on the road. Polyurethane also tolerates dirt and water well, because there?s no exposed ball and race to wear. The trade-off is that a bushing allows less misalignment than a spherical joint, so a bushed rod end suits links that mostly pivot in one plane.
A heim joint, also called a spherical rod end or rod end bearing, uses a metal ball inside a race. It allows a lot of misalignment, so the link can move freely through complex angles, which suits extreme articulation. But heim joints pass more noise and vibration into the vehicle, and dirt and water wear the ball and race, so they need regular inspection and replacement on off-road vehicles.
For a vehicle that spends most of its time on the road, a bushed rod end is usually the better choice. For links that need extreme misalignment in competition, heim joints are common. Many builds combine them, using bushed rod ends where comfort matters and spherical joints where articulation does.
Where Rod Ends Are Used
A rod end, or link end, appears wherever a custom link is needed:
- 4-link and 3-link suspension, where several links locate a solid axle
- Custom radius arms, which locate the front axle on many 4x4 builds
- Track bars and panhard bars, which keep the axle centered side to side
- Steering links on off-road builds, where a custom layout calls for a fabricated link
- Race car links, where strength and precise location both matter
In each case, the rod end has to suit the link tube, the bushing and the mounting bracket.
Measuring a Rod End
Each listing shows the outside diameter, inside diameter and length, and every rod end is guaranteed to match the dimensions shown in the listing.
Outside Diameter
The outside diameter is the size of the rod end?s housing. It decides how the rod end fits the mounting bracket, and how much clearance it needs as the link moves.
Inside Diameter
The inside diameter is the size of the bore. It must match the outside of the bushing you plan to fit, so the bushing is held firmly in the rod end without being crushed.
Length
The length determines how far the rod end extends from the link tube. Allow for it when you calculate the overall length of the finished link.
Attachment Method
Check whether the rod end is designed to be welded in or threaded, and make sure it suits the tube you?re using.
Rod End Bushings, Sleeves and Polyurethane
A rod end only works as well as the bushing inside it. Match the polyurethane bushing to the rod end?s bore, and the inner sleeve to the mounting bolt. A bushing that?s too loose will move in the housing, while one that?s too tight will be overloaded.
The bushing?s durometer (hardness) should suit the load and the use. A firmer bushing locates the link more precisely, while a softer one absorbs more vibration. Grease the bushing and sleeve with a polyurethane-safe grease on assembly, so the rod end pivots smoothly without squeaking.
Fabrication Notes
Building a link with a rod end is safety-critical work, so it pays to do it carefully.
- Weld correctly. Use the right process and filler for the materials, and make sure the welds fully penetrate.
- Control the heat. Excess heat can weaken the metal around the weld.
- Protect the bushing. Never weld with the bushing in the rod end, because the heat will destroy the polyurethane. Fit the bushing after the rod end has cooled.
- Check thread engagement. On a threaded rod end, make sure there?s enough thread engaged, and lock it with a jam nut.
- Align both ends. The bores at each end of a link should line up, so the link isn?t twisted when it?s mounted.
A qualified fabricator is recommended for any suspension or steering link.
Inspecting Rod Ends
Check every rod end regularly, especially on vehicles that see off-road use. Look for:
- Cracks at the weld or in the forged body
- Bushing wear, or polyurethane extruding from the housing
- A worn or scored inner sleeve
- Loose mounting bolts or jam nuts
Re-check the torque on the mounting bolts after the first drive, and again after off-road use.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
- Custom links are the builder?s responsibility, and they need correct design and welding
- A bushed rod end allows less misalignment than a heim joint
- A rod end isn?t a tie rod end, which is a different steering part
- Using custom links on public roads may be subject to inspection rules
Compliance and Insurance
Custom suspension and steering links must meet the inspection and modification rules of the state where your vehicle is registered. Tell your insurance company about any modifications.
