A Nolathane jack holder spring is a jack strap holder that secures a floor jack?s folded handle against the jack body. This floor jack handle holder keeps the handle tight and out of the way when the jack is stored or moved, so it can?t swing, rattle or snag on anything.
Most floor jacks have a handle that folds down over the body for storage. Without something to hold it, that handle swings free every time the jack is rolled, lifted or carried. Over time, the original strap or spring clip stretches, cracks or goes missing, and the handle starts to flop around. A replacement holder restores a neat, secure stored position. Each listing shows the fitment.
What a Jack Strap Holder Does
A jack strap holder works like a retention strap or spring clip for the handle. When you fold the handle down along the jack body, the holder grips it and keeps it there. It does three jobs:
- Keeps the folded handle tight to the jack body, so it stays in its stored position
- Stops swing and rattle when the jack is rolled across the floor or carried
- Keeps the jack compact, so it takes up less room in storage and is easier to handle
When you need the jack, the handle releases easily from the holder, ready to fit into its socket.
Problems With a Loose Folded Handle
A folded handle that isn?t secured causes a surprising number of problems.
Damage to the jack. A loose handle clangs against the jack body every time the jack moves. Over time, that chips the paint or powder coat, which lets rust start on the body.
Catching on other equipment. In a busy shop, a handle that swings out from the jack catches on jack stands, toolboxes, creepers and anything else nearby. That slows you down, and can knock other equipment over.
Swinging into people and vehicles. When you roll or lift a jack with a loose handle, the handle can swing into your legs, or into a vehicle parked nearby. A heavy steel handle can bruise a shin or dent a door.
Awkward lifting and storage. A floor jack is heavy, and lifting it into a truck bed or onto a shelf is harder when the handle is swinging. A secured handle makes the jack one compact unit that?s easier to lift and fit into a storage space.
Fitting a Jack Strap Holder
Floor jack designs vary, so check the fit before you order:
- Check the attachment point. Make sure your jack body has a suitable point to attach the holder, usually where the original strap or clip was fitted.
- Fit the holder as shown in the listing. Make sure it?s secure on the jack body.
- Fold the handle and check that it locks in. The holder should grip the handle firmly in its stored position.
- Check that it releases easily. You should be able to free the handle quickly when you need to use the jack.
Each listing shows the fitment.
Storing and Transporting a Floor Jack
Storing a floor jack properly protects the jack and keeps your shop or garage safe. Follow these steps each time you put it away:
- Lower the saddle fully. Storing the jack with the saddle lowered takes the load off the hydraulics and keeps the jack compact.
- Close the release valve. That keeps the hydraulic fluid in place, and helps stop air getting into the system.
- Fold and secure the handle. Fold the handle down along the jack body, and lock it into the strap holder.
- Store the jack upright on a level surface. Storing it on its side can let hydraulic fluid leak.
- Strap it down in a vehicle. If you carry a floor jack in a truck or van, strap it down so it can?t slide or tip over. A secured handle helps, but the jack itself still needs to be tied down.
A well-stored jack is ready to use the next time you need it, and lasts longer.
Floor Jack Safety Basics
Whenever you use a floor jack, keep these basics in mind:
- Use the right jacking points. Check the vehicle?s service information for the specified lifting points.
- Always support the vehicle on jack stands. A floor jack can lose pressure, so never go underneath a vehicle held up by the jack alone.
- Chock the wheels that stay on the ground before you start lifting.
- Choose firm, level ground, so the jack can?t sink or roll.
- Lower the vehicle slowly, and make sure everyone is clear before you open the release valve.
Caring for the Strap Holder
A strap holder needs very little care, but it does wear over time:
- Check for stretch, cracks or lost tension. A holder that has stretched or lost its spring won?t grip the handle firmly.
- Keep it clean of oil and grit. Shop floors collect oil, grease and dirt, which can wear the holder. Wipe it down occasionally.
- Replace it when it no longer holds the handle firmly. If the handle starts swinging again, it?s time for a new holder.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
- The holder fits the listed jack designs only
- It can?t repair a worn handle socket, a worn pivot or the hydraulics
- It isn?t a load-bearing part
- It isn?t a substitute for strapping down the jack itself during transport
