Nolathane headlight sensor brackets let lifted 4WDs and utes keep their factory self-levelling headlights working as designed. By repositioning the headlight level sensor to suit the new ride height, they help keep your headlight aim within specification in every driving condition, whether you?re empty, loaded or towing.
A suspension lift shouldn?t mean giving up a safety feature. These simple, easy-to-fit brackets are a practical part of any lift on a vehicle with automatic headlight levelling.
How Automatic Headlight Levelling Works
Many modern vehicles automatically adjust the aim of their headlights to suit how the vehicle is sitting. A ride height sensor, usually mounted near the rear suspension, is connected to the axle or a suspension arm by a small link arm.
As the vehicle is loaded, towing, or pitching under braking and acceleration, the link arm moves and the sensor measures the change in ride height. A control unit uses this reading to drive small levelling motors in the headlights, raising or lowering the beam to keep it at the correct angle on the road.
Why Lifting Affects Headlight Levelling
The level sensor is calibrated to the vehicle?s factory ride height. When a vehicle is lifted, the distance between the body and the axle increases, and the sensor?s link arm sits at a different angle.
The sensor reads this new position as if the vehicle were loaded or pitched, and the control unit adjusts the headlights accordingly, even though the vehicle is actually sitting level. Depending on the vehicle and the lift, the headlights can end up aimed too high or too low. In some cases, the system may register a fault.
The Risks of Incorrect Headlight Aim
Incorrectly aimed headlights affect both you and other road users:
- Aimed too high: dipped (low) beams can dazzle oncoming drivers and the vehicles ahead, creating a safety hazard.
- Aimed too low: the road ahead isn?t lit as far as it should be, reducing your visibility and reaction time at night.
- Compliance: headlight aim is checked during roadworthy and periodic vehicle inspections, and incorrect aim can cause a vehicle to fail.
Keeping the self-levelling system working correctly after a lift is the most reliable way to keep your headlights where they should be.
How Headlight Sensor Brackets Work
Nolathane headlight sensor brackets reposition the level sensor or its link arm to compensate for the added ride height. With the sensor restored to the correct working angle, it reads the vehicle?s attitude accurately again. The control unit then aims the headlights as the manufacturer intended, and the system continues to adjust automatically for loads and towing.
Height Sensor Adjuster and Bracket Extension Kits
The range includes:
- Height sensor adjuster bracket kits: vehicle-specific brackets or spacers that reposition the headlight level sensor to suit a lifted ride height.
- Bracket extension kits: on some vehicles, these reposition several components affected by a lift together, such as the headlight sensor, sway bar link mounts and brake line brackets.
Each listing shows the vehicle, fitting position and kit contents.
Fitting a Headlight Sensor Bracket
Headlight sensor brackets are designed for straightforward fitment by professional workshops and experienced home mechanics. As a general guide:
- Fit the bracket with the vehicle at its new ride height, on level ground, unladen.
- Remove the level sensor or link arm mounting as described in the kit instructions.
- Fit the Nolathane bracket or spacer, then reattach the sensor or link arm using the hardware supplied.
- Check that the link arm moves freely through full suspension travel without binding or contacting other components.
Checking Headlight Aim After Fitting
After fitting the bracket, check the headlight aim on level ground against a wall or with headlight aiming equipment. Some vehicles may need the levelling system reset or recalibrated with a diagnostic tool, so follow the vehicle manufacturer?s procedure, or have a qualified workshop check it.
Who Headlight Sensor Brackets Suit
Headlight sensor brackets suit owners of lifted 4WDs, utes and pick-ups with automatic headlight levelling, and drivers who?ve noticed dazzling or poorly aimed headlights after a lift. They?re also used by touring and towing vehicles that need the levelling system to keep adjusting for changing loads, and by workshops completing lift installations that need to keep factory systems working.
