Nolathane subframe bushes replace the worn mounts between a vehicle?s subframe and its body. Most modern cars, SUVs and many utes don?t bolt their suspension directly to the body. Instead, the suspension arms, steering rack, engine or differential are mounted to a separate subframe, also called a cradle, which is then attached to the body through large rubber bushes.

When they wear, the whole subframe can shift under braking, acceleration and cornering, taking every suspension pivot with it. Rear Subframes

A rear subframe, or rear cradle, is common on vehicles with independent rear suspension (IRS). It carries the rear control arms and, on rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles, the differential. Rear subframe bushes have to resist braking, cornering and drive torque, which is why rear subframe bushes often wear quickly on powerful or heavily loaded vehicles.

Why Subframe Bushes Matter

Subframe bushes are designed to isolate road noise and vibration from the cabin, so factory versions are usually large and soft. That softness allows the subframe to move a small amount relative to the body. Every suspension arm on the subframe moves with it, so even new arm bushes can?t hold an alignment if the subframe itself is shifting.

On rear subframes that carry the differential, a soft subframe also lets drive torque twist the whole assembly. That?s a common cause of wheel hop, axle tramp and a clunk when taking up drive. Firmer subframe bushes keep the rear suspension geometry stable under power, which improves traction and makes the rear end more predictable.

Polyurethane Subframe Bushes

Polyurethane subframe bushes hold the subframe firmly to the body while still isolating some vibration. Nolathane has been making polyurethane suspension bushings since 1974, originally developed to replace brass bushes in hillclimb competition. The signature red bushings are made in a range of durometers (hardness grades) for each position, and offer outstanding abrasion resistance, high load-bearing capability, increased tensile strength and resistance to oil, grease, ozone and weathering.

Trade-Offs to Consider

Replacing Subframe Bushes

Subframe bush replacement suits professional workshops and experienced home mechanics. It often means lowering the subframe partly or completely, so it?s a larger job than most bush replacements. As a general guide:

1. Support the vehicle securely on stands and support the subframe with a suitable jack or cradle.
2. Support the engine or differential if it?s mounted to the subframe.
3. Disconnect brake lines, ABS sensors, exhaust, steering or drive shafts as needed.
4. Mark the subframe?s position, then loosen and remove the mounting bolts and lower it only as far as needed.
5. Remove the old bushes, which may need a press or dedicated tool, and clean the mounting points.
6. Fit the new bushes with a grease suitable for polyurethane, such as a silicone or PTFE-based grease, where specified.
7. Raise the subframe into its marked position and tighten all bolts to the vehicle manufacturer?s specification.
8. Reconnect everything removed, bleed the brakes if any lines were opened, and have a wheel alignment (tracking) carried out.

Some subframe bolts are designed to be used once only, so check the manufacturer?s information and replace them where required.
