Nolathane universal body mount bushes give restorers, custom builders and workshops a durable polyurethane replacement for worn body-to-chassis mounts where no vehicle-specific kit exists. Instead of matching a make and model, a universal bush is selected by its dimensions, so it can be fitted to any mounting point where the outer diameter, inner diameter and length suit the bracket.
Each listing shows the dimensions and kit contents, making it straightforward to compare against measurements taken from the original mounts before you order.
The Role of Body Mount Bushes
On body-on-frame 4WDs, utes (pick-ups), trucks and many older passenger cars, the body or cab is not welded to the chassis. Instead, it sits on a series of mounts bolted through brackets on the frame. Body mount bushings, also called body frame mount bushings or cab mount bushes, sit between the two surfaces at each of those points.
They have three jobs. They locate the body accurately on the chassis so panels, doors and the steering column stay aligned. They allow a small, controlled amount of movement as the chassis flexes over uneven ground. And they isolate the cabin from vibration, road noise and shocks travelling up through the frame.
Most designs use an upper and lower bush that clamp either side of the chassis bracket, with a centre tube setting the crush height and washers spreading the bolt load. When any part of that stack wears, the body begins to move independently of the chassis.
Signs of Worn Body Mount Bushings
Body mounts age slowly, so the symptoms often creep up unnoticed. Common warning signs include:
- Clunks or knocks from beneath the floor when driving over speed bumps, potholes or corrugations.
- Increased vibration through the floor, seats or steering wheel, particularly at idle or highway speed.
- Squeaks or creaks from the body as the vehicle twists over uneven ground or a driveway lip.
- Changes in door or bonnet (hood) gaps, or a body that sits visibly lower or leans on one side.
- Cracked, split, flattened or oil-soaked rubber visible at the mount, or bushes that have pushed out from the bracket.
A visual check with the vehicle on a hoist usually confirms it. Lift the body slightly at each mount with a pry bar or jack and look for excessive movement, collapsed bushes or corroded hardware.
When a Universal Body Mount Bush Makes Sense
Vehicle-specific kits are the simplest choice when they are available, because every mount position is already matched. A universal body mount bush is the practical alternative in situations such as:
- Classic and heritage restorations where the original mounts are no longer produced.
- Custom builds, body swaps and cab conversions where the body and chassis come from different sources.
- Fabricated brackets, canopies, tray bodies and accessory mounts that need a compliant, isolated fixing point.
- Low-volume or imported vehicles that sit outside the direct-fit catalogue.
- Individual mount positions that wear faster than the rest and only need a single replacement.
Measuring for the Right Fit
Accurate measurement is the most important step when choosing a universal body mount bush. Take each reading from a clean original bush or directly from the bracket and bolt, and compare it with the dimensions shown in each listing.
Outer Diameter
The outer diameter (OD) must suit the hole or locating collar in the chassis bracket. Too small and the bush can move off centre; too large and it will not seat correctly.
Inner Diameter
The inner diameter (ID) must suit the centre tube or the mounting bolt. Check the bolt size and whether the original design used a separate sleeve.
Length and Stack Height
The bush length, together with the bracket thickness and centre tube, sets the final body height and the clamping preload. A taller stack raises the body slightly, and a shorter one lowers it. Matching the original stack height keeps panel gaps, the steering shaft and the radiator shroud where they belong.
If the measurements fall between sizes, our support team can help confirm whether a universal bush will suit the application.
Polyurethane Versus Rubber Body Mounts
Factory body mounts are usually soft rubber, chosen for maximum isolation. Rubber, however, breaks down with age, heat, oil and ozone exposure, and once it softens or splits the body moves excessively.
Polyurethane holds its shape under load far longer. It resists oil, grease, ozone and weathering, and its abrasion resistance and tensile strength mean it does not tear or extrude as rubber does. The result is a body that stays firmly located on the chassis, with less shuffle over rough tracks and more consistent panel alignment over time. For 4WDs carrying heavy canopies, roof loads or towing, the high load-bearing capability of polyurethane is a genuine advantage.
Fitting Universal Body Mount Bushes
Preparing the Mounting Points
Body mount bolts are often heavily corroded, so soak them in penetrating oil well before starting and check that captive or cage nuts in the body are intact. Work on one side or a few mounts at a time, loosening the others only enough to lift the body slightly. Before lifting, check clearances around the radiator and fan shroud, steering shaft, wiring, brake lines and fuel filler hoses.
Clean the brackets and inspect them for rust or cracking. A new bush cannot compensate for a corroded or distorted bracket, which should be repaired first. Apply a polyurethane-compatible bushing grease to the contact faces to prevent squeaks as the bushes settle.
Torque and Re-Check
Tighten each bolt to the manufacturer?s torque specification, making sure the centre tube is fully seated so the bush is not over-compressed. Re-check the torque after a few hundred kilometres, once the new bushes have bedded in, and check door and bonnet gaps after the job is complete.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
Polyurethane body mounts are firmer than soft rubber, so some additional vibration and road noise can reach the cabin, particularly on corrugated roads or at idle in diesel vehicles. For most owners, the improvement in body control outweighs this, but anyone prioritising maximum isolation should factor it in.
Small differences in stack height can change body height or alter clearances at the steering shaft, radiator and transmission tunnel, so measure carefully and check clearances once fitted. Mixing new polyurethane mounts with old, collapsed rubber mounts can concentrate loads on the stiffer positions, so replacing a full set at the same time gives the most even result. Universal bushes also rely on accurate measurement; ordering by guesswork is the most common cause of a poor fit.
Compliance
Body mounts form part of the vehicle?s structure, so any replacement must keep the vehicle safe and within the standards that apply where it is registered. In Australia, requirements vary between states and territories, especially where body height changes or a body lift is involved. In the UK and Europe, body and chassis mounts are assessed at the MOT or periodic roadworthiness inspection. Tell your insurer about any change to the vehicle?s body or suspension.
Nolathane Polyurethane Since 1974
Nolathane has been making polyurethane suspension bushings since 1974, originally developed to replace brass bushes in hillclimb competition. More than 50 years on, the signature red bushings are produced in a range of durometers (hardness grades) selected for each application, balancing isolation, load capacity and durability. That experience is backed by superior elasticity, memory and outright durability, and it is why mechanics and DIY bush mechanics continue to trust Nolathane to repair, restore and upgrade their vehicles.
Lifetime Warranty
Nolathane universal body mount bushes are covered by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects in material and workmanship, for the original vehicle they are fitted to. Our fitment guarantee means the bush you receive matches the dimensions shown in the listing, and a 60-day returns window gives you time to check the fit against your mounting points.
