Nolathane spring saddles replace the worn insulators and pads that sit between a leaf spring and the axle, or between the spring and its mounting plate. On many classic and older leaf sprung vehicles, the spring isn?t clamped metal-to-metal to the axle. Instead, it sits in a saddle lined with rubber insulators that cushion road noise and vibration. When those insulators perish, the spring can shift in the saddle, and the rear axle loses its firm location.
Polyurethane spring saddle insulators restore a firm, quiet clamp between spring and axle, and are an important part of any rear leaf spring restoration on classic passenger cars, wagons, utes and light commercial vehicles.
What a Spring Saddle Does
A spring saddle, also called a leaf spring saddle, spring seat or saddle mount, is the part that holds the middle of a leaf spring against the axle. On many vehicles it includes:
- An upper and lower housing or plate that wraps around the spring
- Insulators or pads that sit between the spring and the housing
- U-bolts that clamp the whole assembly to the axle tube
The insulators isolate the cabin from road noise, axle vibration and gear whine. They also allow a small, controlled amount of movement so the spring can work without transmitting every bump directly into the body.
Why Spring Saddle Insulators Wear Out
Spring saddle insulators are often among the oldest rubber parts on a classic vehicle. They wear because of:
- Constant clamping load from the U-bolts and vehicle weight
- Braking and acceleration forces trying to shift the axle on the spring
- Heat, ozone and age hardening and cracking the rubber
- Oil and grease from the differential softening it
- Water, mud and road salt trapped in the saddle
As the rubber compresses and breaks down, the U-bolts lose clamping force, and the spring can move inside the saddle.
Signs of Worn Spring Saddles
- A clunk from the rear when taking off, braking or changing between drive and reverse
- Axle tramp or wheel hop under hard acceleration
- The rear of the vehicle wandering or steering itself under load
- U-bolts that keep coming loose after being re-tightened
- Rubber squeezing out of the saddle, or visible gaps around the spring
- Rust staining or metal-to-metal wear marks on the spring or saddle
- The axle sitting slightly out of square on the springs
Worn saddles are often overlooked because they?re hidden inside the clamp. If the leaf spring bushes are good but the rear still clunks or wanders, the saddles are worth checking.
Why Spring Saddles Matter for Handling
The leaf spring locates the axle, and the saddle is where the spring and axle meet. If the spring can move in its saddle, the axle can rotate under braking and acceleration, which is called axle wrap, and it can shift slightly fore and aft. That changes the angle of the tailshaft (driveshaft or propshaft) and the direction the rear wheels point.
Firm saddle insulators keep the axle clamped square to the spring, so the rear end tracks straight, power goes down cleanly, and braking stays stable.
Polyurethane vs Rubber Saddle Insulators
Original saddle insulators are rubber, designed to absorb as much noise as possible. They compress and crack with age, and once they lose their shape, the clamping force from the U-bolts drops.
Polyurethane spring saddle insulators keep their shape under the constant clamping load, so the U-bolts stay tight and the spring stays located. Nolathane has been making polyurethane suspension bushings since 1974, originally developed to replace brass bushes in hillclimb competition. The signature red polyurethane is made in a range of durometers (hardness grades) for each position, and offers outstanding abrasion resistance, high load-bearing capability, increased tensile strength and resistance to oil, grease, ozone and weathering.
The honest trade-off is that firmer saddle insulators can transmit slightly more axle and gear noise into the cabin than soft original rubber. Most owners notice a tighter, more planted rear end rather than harshness. Owners carrying out a strictly original concours restoration may prefer rubber for authenticity.
Spring Saddles as Part of a Rear Suspension Restoration
Spring saddles are best replaced as part of a complete rear leaf spring service. While the springs are unclamped, it?s the ideal time to:
- Replace the U-bolts, which shouldn?t be reused once tightened
- Renew the front eye, rear eye and shackle bushes
- Check the spring leaves, centre bolt and rebound clips
- Inspect the shackles and pins for wear and corrosion
- Check the shock absorbers and their bushes
Renewing every worn part at once means the new saddles aren?t undermined by play elsewhere.
Fitting Spring Saddles
Fitting suits professional workshops and experienced home mechanics. As a general guide:
- Support the chassis on stands and support the axle with a jack.
- Work on one side at a time, removing the U-bolts and the saddle assembly.
- Remove the old insulators and clean the saddle housings, removing rust and old rubber.
- Check that the spring?s centre bolt is intact and sits correctly in the axle perch.
- Fit the new insulators into the saddle and position the spring correctly.
- Fit new U-bolts and tighten them evenly in a crossing pattern to specification.
- Lower the vehicle onto its wheels and repeat on the other side.
Re-check U-bolt torque after the first few hundred kilometres, as the new insulators settle under load.
Choosing the Right Spring Saddles
Saddle designs vary between vehicles and model years. Confirm the vehicle, body style and spring type before ordering. Each listing shows the vehicles and position the kit suits, and our fitment guarantee means the kit you order for your vehicle is confirmed to suit it.
Lifetime Warranty
Nolathane spring saddles are backed by a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects in material and workmanship, for the original vehicle they?re fitted to.
