A Nolathane floor jack handle clip holds the jack handle upright and out of the way while you position the jack or lift the vehicle. This floor jack handle holder keeps the handle secure in its socket, so it can?t drop onto the vehicle, swing across the shop floor or knock the release valve.
It?s a small part, but it solves a problem every mechanic knows. A floor jack handle that flops around gets in the way, scratches paint and becomes a hazard on a busy floor. A clip keeps it where it belongs. Each listing shows the fitment.
What a Floor Jack Handle Clip Does
On most floor jacks, the handle sits in a socket at the back of the jack. When you pump the handle, the socket transfers the motion to the hydraulic pump. When you twist the handle, it opens or closes the release valve that lowers the jack.
The trouble is that the handle sits loosely in that socket when you?re not pumping it. Let go of it, and it falls to one side. A handle clip or holder solves that. It does three things:
- Holds the handle vertical in its socket, so it stays upright when you let go
- Stops the handle from dropping onto the vehicle, the floor or your feet
- Makes the jack easier to roll and position, because the handle stays in line instead of swinging as the jack moves
With the handle held upright, you can roll the jack into position, line it up with the jacking point, and step away without the handle falling.
Why a Loose Jack Handle Is a Hazard
A loose floor jack handle causes more problems than most people realize.
Damage to the vehicle. A floor jack handle is long and heavy. When it falls, it can swing into the bodywork, the bumper or the lights, and leave a dent or a scratch. In a shop working on customers? vehicles, that?s an expensive mistake.
A trip hazard. A handle lying across the shop floor is easy to step on or trip over, especially when you?re moving around a vehicle or carrying parts. In a busy garage, that?s a real injury risk.
Knocking the release valve. On many jacks, the release valve is opened by twisting the handle. A handle that falls or gets bumped can twist the valve, letting the jack lower when you don?t expect it. That?s one of the reasons you should never rely on a jack alone to hold a vehicle.
Keeping the handle upright and secure reduces all three risks.
Fitting the Clip to Your Floor Jack
Floor jacks come in many designs, so check the fit before you order:
- Check the handle socket design. Look at how the handle fits into your jack, and where a clip or holder can attach.
- Check the handle diameter. The clip needs to suit the thickness of your jack handle, so it grips it firmly.
- Fit the clip or strap as shown in the listing. Make sure it sits securely and holds the handle upright.
- Check that the handle still works freely. Pump the handle and operate the release valve, and confirm the clip doesn?t interfere with either.
Each listing shows the fitment.
Floor Jack Safety Basics
A handle clip makes a floor jack easier and safer to use, but it?s only one part of using a jack safely. These basics apply every time you lift a vehicle:
- Lift only at the vehicle?s specified jacking points. The owner?s manual or service information shows where they are. Lifting elsewhere can damage the vehicle or let it slip off the jack.
- Use jack stands before working underneath. A floor jack is designed to lift, not to hold. Never rely on the jack alone. Once the vehicle is raised, place jack stands at the correct support points and lower the vehicle onto them before going underneath.
- Chock the wheels. Chock the wheels that stay on the ground, so the vehicle can?t roll while it?s being lifted.
- Work on firm, level ground. A jack can sink into soft ground or roll on a slope. A level concrete floor is best.
- Lower slowly with the release valve. Open the valve gradually, so the vehicle comes down under control. Make sure no one is underneath, and that tools and feet are clear.
Following these steps every time protects you, anyone working with you, and the vehicle.
Caring for Floor Jack Accessories
A handle clip needs very little care, but it?s worth checking now and then:
- Check for cracks or stretch. A clip that has cracked or stretched won?t hold the handle firmly.
- Keep it free of oil and grit. Shop floors collect oil, grease and dirt. Wipe the clip down occasionally so it keeps its grip.
- Replace it when it no longer grips. If the handle starts to fall again, the clip has worn and should be replaced.
While you?re checking the clip, look over the jack itself. Check for hydraulic leaks, make sure the wheels roll freely, and confirm that the release valve opens and closes smoothly.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
- The clip fits the listed jack and handle designs only
- It can?t repair a worn handle socket, leaking hydraulics or a faulty release valve
- It isn?t a lifting or load-bearing part
