Nolathane exhaust bushings are polyurethane exhaust hanger isolators that hold your exhaust system in place under the vehicle. An exhaust hanger lets the pipes, muffler, and tailpipe move slightly with the engine while keeping them from banging against the body. Our exhaust hangers replace worn rubber isolators with polyurethane that holds its shape.
When exhaust hangers stretch or crack, the system starts to sag, rattle, and knock, and cabin drone often gets worse. Fresh exhaust bushings bring back quiet, secure support. Each listing shows the hanger profile, the position, and the vehicles each isolator fits.
How Exhaust Hangers Support the System
An exhaust system is long, heavy, and attached to an engine that rocks on its mounts. It also grows and shrinks as it heats up and cools down. It can?t be bolted rigidly to the body, or it would crack and pass every vibration into the cabin.
Exhaust hangers solve that. Steel rods welded to the exhaust pipe pass through isolators, and those isolators hang from brackets on the chassis. The isolator lets the exhaust move with engine rock and heat expansion, while absorbing vibration so it doesn?t reach the body.
Each hanger carries part of the exhaust?s weight, so when one fails, the others take more load and wear faster.
Exhaust Hanger Isolator Profiles
Exhaust hanger isolators come in a few common profiles, matched to the rods and brackets on each vehicle. Each listing shows the profile.
Single and Double Rod Isolators
These isolators have holes for one or two hanger rods. A double rod isolator connects a rod on the exhaust pipe to a rod on the chassis, while a single rod design fits a rod into a fixed bracket.
Round and Donut-Style Isolators
Round, or donut-style, isolators are ring-shaped, with rods passing through holes around the ring. They?re common at the rear of the exhaust, near the muffler and tailpipe.
Bolt-On Hanger Brackets
Some exhaust pipe hangers use bolt-on metal brackets. These are a different part from the isolators in this range, but the isolators often fit into or between them.
Signs of Worn Exhaust Hangers
Worn exhaust hangers usually make themselves heard. Watch for:
- Rattles or clunks from under the vehicle, especially over bumps
- The exhaust sagging or sitting lower than usual
- The muffler or tailpipe knocking against the body or heat shields
- More drone in the cabin
- Stretched, cracked, or missing isolators
- The exhaust swinging freely when you bump it by hand with the engine cold
Rubber, Polyurethane and Silicone Exhaust Hangers
Exhaust hangers come in three main materials, and each has trade-offs.
A rubber exhaust hanger is the most common factory choice. Rubber is soft and absorbs vibration well, but exhaust hanger rubber stretches and cracks with heat and age. Once it stretches, the exhaust starts to sag and swing.
Polyurethane holds its shape far better and resists oil, ozone, and weathering. At the cooler hanger positions along the exhaust, it stops the sag and swing that worn rubber allows, and it keeps the system where it should be for longer.
Silicone tolerates the highest temperatures of the three, which makes it useful very close to the hottest parts of the exhaust.
That?s why polyurethane hangers suit positions away from the hottest exhaust sections. Matching the material to the position gives the best result.
Hanger Positions and Heat
Not every hanger on an exhaust sees the same heat. Hangers close to the exhaust manifold, downpipe, or catalytic converter run much hotter than those further back near the muffler and tailpipe.
That difference matters when choosing hangers. A material that works well at the rear of the exhaust may not suit a position right next to the catalytic converter. Check the listing for the position each isolator is designed for, so every hanger is matched to the heat it will see.
Choosing Exhaust Hangers
Choosing the right hanger depends on the profile and position. Each listing shows the details.
Vehicle-Specific Profiles
Many vehicles use hanger profiles designed for that model. Use the vehicle search to find the isolators that match your exhaust.
Position Along the Exhaust
Check where each hanger sits, from the front of the exhaust to the tailpipe, and choose the isolator suited to that position.
Custom and Modified Exhaust Systems
On a custom exhaust build, match the rod spacing and rod diameter to the isolator profile. Choosing a profile that suits your rods makes fitting straightforward.
Fitting Exhaust Hanger Isolators
Exhaust hanger isolators are usually simple to fit. The general process looks like this:
- Work with the exhaust fully cold
- Support the exhaust so it can?t drop
- Lever or press the old isolator off the rods with a suitable removal tool
- Fit the new isolator, using a rubber-safe lubricant as specified
- Check clearance to the body, heat shields, and fuel and brake lines
- Check again after the exhaust has been through a heat cycle
If brackets or rods need cutting or welding, use a qualified installer.
Limitations and Trade-Offs
Exhaust hangers fix sag, rattle, and swing, but they have limits:
- Firmer isolators can pass more vibration than soft rubber
- Polyurethane isn?t suited to positions with extreme heat
- New hangers can?t fix a leaking exhaust, broken rods or brackets, or a damaged muffler
- Drone caused by the exhaust design itself won?t go away with new hangers
Compliance and Insurance
Your exhaust must still meet the noise, emissions, and inspection rules of the state where the vehicle is registered. Let your insurance company know about any modifications.
