NOLATHANE Sway Bar Bracket

A sway bar bracket, listed by some manufacturers as a stabilizer bar bracket, clamps around the bushing at the center of the bar and bolts it to the chassis or subframe. It is a small pressed or cast part holding a component that generates a considerable amount of torque.

Most people never look at one until a bolt refuses to move or something starts knocking.

What a Sway Bar Bracket Does

The bar resists lean by twisting, and it can only twist if the middle is held absolutely still while the ends move in opposite directions.

That holding job belongs to two brackets, one either side of the vehicle centerline. Each one clamps a bushing tightly enough that the bushing cannot rotate inside it, which forces the bar to rotate inside the bushing instead. The whole arrangement depends on the bracket staying rigid and staying put.

If the bracket flexes under load, or the bolts holding it have loosened, some of the force that should be twisting the bar goes into moving it instead. The bar delivers less than its rating suggests, and the vehicle leans further than it should.

The same applies to whatever the bracket bolts to. A sway bar mounting bracket can be perfectly solid while the chassis panel or subframe behind it deflects, which costs you the same performance by a different route.

Sway Bar Bracket vs Sway Bar Link Bracket

Two different brackets get confused because both have sway bar in the name.

The sway bar bracket holds the bar to the chassis at the center of the vehicle. There are two, they clamp the mount bushings, and they are what most people mean.

A sway bar link bracket is the mounting point at the far end, where the link attaches to the control arm, the strut or the axle. On some vehicles that is a tab welded to the arm, on others it is a separate bolt-on bracket, and on lifted trucks it is sometimes a relocation piece added to correct link angle.

The two also tend to fail in quite different ways. A bar mount bracket fails by flexing, cracking or losing its bolts. A sway bar end link mounting bracket usually fails by the hole elongating where the link bolt has been working against it, which produces a knock that sounds exactly like a worn link.

If you have replaced links and the noise came straight back, look at the bracket the link bolts to rather than buying another set of links.

Sway Bar Bushing Bracket or Just the Bushing

On most vehicles these are separate parts and the bushing is the one that wears.

Replace just the bushing when the bracket is straight, the bolt holes are round, the metal is sound and the bore where the bushing seats is smooth. That describes the majority of vehicles, and a sway bar bracket bushing is inexpensive enough that it is worth trying first.

Sway bar bracket replacement becomes necessary when the bolt holes have elongated, when the bracket has visibly distorted, when corrosion has reduced the metal thickness to scale rather than surface rust, or when the bore has been polished or scored by a bushing that was already spinning inside it.

That last one matters and it is easy to miss. A scored bracket bore will not hold a new bushing still, so the new one spins exactly like the old one did and wears out early. Run a finger inside the bracket before deciding.

On some designs the bushing and bracket come as one assembly, in which case the decision is made for you.

Front and Rear Sway Bar Brackets Are Not the Same Part

Worth checking before ordering, because the two ends of the vehicle use different components on most designs.

A front sway bar bracket usually bolts to a subframe or crossmember, which is reasonably substantial structure. The bar diameter at the front is frequently larger than the rear, so the bracket and the bushing it holds are correspondingly bigger.

A rear sway bar bracket often mounts to lighter structure, sometimes to a bracket welded to the body rather than to a subframe. That is where cracking is more common, and it is why some vehicles need a reinforcement at the rear while the front never gives trouble.

The bolt pattern differs too, along with the direction the bracket faces and whether it clamps from above or below. Ordering a front bracket for a rear position is a straightforward mistake to make from a photograph.

Check the listing for the end of the vehicle it suits as well as the bar diameter, and if you are replacing all four, confirm you have two of each rather than four of one.

Sway Bar Drop Brackets After a Lift

Raising a truck moves the suspension down while the sway bar stays bolted where it was.

The links end up stretched between two points further apart than before, which preloads the bar and leaves it partly twisted while the truck is sitting still. The bar also sits high relative to the suspension, so the links work at a steeper angle and transfer less of their load into the bar.

A sway bar drop bracket lowers the mounting point to match the new ride height. The bar sits level again, the links return to something close to vertical, and the bar works through its intended range rather than fighting the lift.

Longer links alone remove the preload but leave the angle wrong, which is why a substantial lift usually needs the bracket rather than just the link. The trade is ground clearance, since the bracket hangs lower than the original mount.

Sway Bar Bracket Bolts and Why They Seize

This is what turns a twenty minute job into an afternoon, and it is worth planning for rather than discovering.

Sway bar bracket bolts thread into the chassis or a captive nut in a position that collects road spray and salt continuously. They are also rarely disturbed, so on a fifteen year old vehicle they have had a long time to bond themselves in place.

When one rounds off or shears, the repair changes completely. A sheared bolt in a captive nut means extracting it or drilling and retapping, on your back, underneath the vehicle.

Penetrating fluid applied the night before is worth more than force on the day. Heat helps where it can be used safely. A six point socket rather than a twelve point reduces the chance of rounding the head.

Replacing the bolts rather than reusing them is cheap insurance on any vehicle with age behind it, and some designs specify them as single use anyway.

When a Sway Bar Bracket Needs Replacing

• Bolt holes elongated where the bracket has been moving
• Cracks in the bracket itself or in the panel it bolts to
• Visible distortion or bending
• Corrosion that has become scale rather than surface rust
• A bore polished or scored by a bushing that has been spinning
• Bolts that have been loose enough to leave witness marks
• Clunking traced to the center of the bar rather than the ends
• A bracket that flexes visibly when the bar is levered

On a vehicle that has had a heavier bar fitted, check the chassis mounting points as well. A larger diameter bar feeds more load into a bracket and panel that were specified around the original.

Universal Sway Bar Brackets

Beyond vehicle specific parts, universal sway bar brackets cover custom builds, modified vehicles and applications no fitment guide lists.

These are sized by bar diameter rather than by vehicle, so measure the bar where the bushing will sit rather than working from the original specification. Anyone running an aftermarket bar is no longer on the factory diameter, and upgraded bars are commonly several millimeters larger.

Check the mounting hole spacing and the available clearance before ordering, since a universal bracket has to suit both the bar and whatever it is bolting to.

Clamping a Sway Bar Bracket Properly

Torque the bracket to its full specification rather than stopping short. The instinct is to avoid crushing the polyurethane, and that instinct causes the exact failure it is trying to prevent, because a bushing that is not held firmly rotates in the bracket and destroys itself.

Grease the bushing bore on assembly with a silicone or PTFE based product rather than lithium or petroleum, which degrades the material over time.

Fit both sides and torque them together so the bar sits square across the vehicle rather than being pulled to one side.

On a drop bracket, cycle the suspension through its full travel and check clearance at both extremes before setting link length with the vehicle back on its wheels.

No alignment is required after any of this work, though rechecking the fasteners after a few hundred miles is worth the two minutes.

Find Sway Bar Brackets for Your Vehicle

The bracket is off anyway, so it's the right time for fresh sway bar bushings too. Brackets are listed under sway bars and sway bar kits.

Select your vehicle to see the sway bar brackets, mounts, drop brackets and mount bushings listed for it, and check the bar diameter each one suits. Every Nolathane component is backed by our warranty, a fitment guarantee and 60 day returns.
